New 2011 Jetta VS Hyundai i45 2.0L

Personally, my take is, the VW Jetta, if built in Turkey/ South America---> Basically the same built quality as the outgoing Jetta, then it's obviously a much better buy over the Elantra 1.6Nu. The Elantra, though pretty well spec, still suffers from hard interior plastics, and outdated 132bhp engine [Just an update from the previous 121bhp engine], and the difference now between the Jetta 1.2TSI/ 1.4TSI over the Elantra 1.6Nu Elite isn't substantial enough to warrant it a fair comparison.

Getting the Elantra now is really getting an outdated car. 2-3yrs from now, when my uncle sells the car, by then, the 1.6Turbo GDi 203bhp engine would have already found its way onto the FL Elantra. Resale values would suffer as a result, as people would rather get the new FL Elantra 1.6T then.

There're just too many things to consider when buying a new car, especially during this high COE market.

one of my uncles ask me to post this question on forums and he wants to get feedback on these 2 cars.

First of all, if your uncle wants feedback, the best is he himself check both cars out on the spot and he will have all the feedback answered. The new VW Jetta has it even arrived our shores yet? If not, how people can give feedback?

In the end, owners are the one buying the car themselves, they are the only one who should know what are the points they are looking for in the targeted ride, go showroom check out their targets have a feel and set their priorities. Asking others in the end, views are spread and owner will only stuck in dilemma. Different people, different views, different spending therefore different targets.

Technologies are ever changing at a fast pace. If we have too many factors to consider at current stage, it is better not to buy anything. Elantra Turbo, don't even think about that coming to our shores in 2 - 3 years time. If it does, we would have gotten the 1.6 GDi in the first place. There are many new technologies, especially engines that are available in other overseas market but not ours, part of it is cost and other is reliability. If there are so many concerns buying a ride, that only means that the owner could not make up his mind and also in doubt whether he should change a ride or not.

Elantra with 130BHP is not considered outdated, in fact, some would rather used this engine because it is improved from the proven current engine that has been served for years. Other than the improved engine, Elantra is not outdated in terms of equipment and styling.

If people were to target a conti, they will not put comparison with any Korean or Japanese makes. In fact, the newly launched Opel Astra 1.4 and 1.6 Turbo, or the Peugeot 508 and Citroen C5 are the closest match to the Jetta than a Sonata.

i45 is a luxury sedan

Jetta is for 20+ yr olds

since you are asking on behalf of your uncle, I think the choice is obvious. but only if he is not a badge whore and is not trying to look young

personally i think jetta looks like a china car (oh those awful awful rear lights) whereas i45 looks better than a merc, if you put the badges aside

Not exactly. The new jetta looks grown up, and definitely doesn't look like a young executive's car.

no offence but first things first. Jetta more suitable to compare with new hyundai elantra due to size similarity.

Jetta is never meant to fight with mid size sedans anyway. VW's mid size sedans offering is the new vw passat. that is another story altogether.

that said, people who are looking at either of the cars you mentioned, probably will not consider each other.. maybe some or a few, but not most.

the reason i can think of why you compare jetta and the i45 is because, elantra no fight to new jetta in terms of value, finishing, quality, branding, performance? lol.

even the 122bhp version is nicer than elantra in my opinion.

valid point [thumbsup]

Would appreciate a debatable view on the above 2 cars. Thx.

New Jetta 1.4TSI Sport 160bhp: 0-100kph: 8.3s 7DSG. Est price: S$130k.

But there should be the 1.4TSI 122bhp and 1.2TSI 105bhp 7DSG versions, starting price from est S$110k.

Hyundai i45 being a larger car, is going for S$120k.

Space and exterior size is important, so is adequate and relaxed performance.

how to compare the 2 cars like that....................at least if you asked to compare McDonald and KFC sound better...................McDonald and Chicken rice how to compare???

jetta in terms of class is a mid size sedan on par with civic, altis. it is never a lux sedan like passat or passat cc

if the uncle is 40+ or 50+.. for goodness sake, get the i45!

If you are driving your girlfriend around, Jetta, and if that girlfriend has already become your wife then I45.

uncle should go well with Camry.

so i45 should be a better choice, else Passat.

Jetta maybe for younger adults.

bro, the new Jetta is slightly bigger than the outgoing model, but that does not mean its comparing with mid size sedan. its never VW's intention to do that. for that, they have the passat.

for e.g, the new renault fluence 1.6A is quite big, maybe biggest in its class. but based on size alone, if you match it up with camry 2L or i45 2L, is it fair?

that said, jetta is still meant to compete in the compact sedan segment (elantra, civic, corolla altis etc).

what vw is doing is offer more value in terms of increased size and built quality + performance over its rivals.

if customers are comparing jetta with bigger rivals, its free positive marketing for vw :D

Actually, what my uncle and I want to know is that is it still worth getting a NA 2.0L sedan like the i45, when the new Jetta [being the size of the Renault Fluence, and both my uncle and I were impressed with the interior space on offer; It's actually larger than the i45 and we're agreeable on this front] having a 1.2/ 1.4TSI engine saves on road tax, is priced roughly the same, has a better brand image, better quality and better features??

I've seen the new Passat, and am not impressed with the interior space at all. If one can get the same interior space in a 'smaller' Jetta, why not?

I'd rather then, as with my uncle, to get a Mondeo rather than a Passat.

Jetta S$130k? Where you hear 1??

after discount should be cheaper

S$130k should be the pricing for the 1.4TSI 160bhp 7DSG version.

The base models are much cheaper.
