Do you also tell them what house to live in, what ccar to drive and what job to take? knn - this sort of question makes me really angry on two fronts 1) The inherent racism is asking in the first place. 2) The attitude that makes you even consider you have any right to run another adults life. My wife's family was not exactly happy about her choice 14 years ago - but how do you think they feel now? I can see this irks you alot. I find it very distasteful too. I remember my GF father (now my F-I-L) discourages her to be steady with me then. He expects his S-I-L to be Banker and PHD material. I'm a graduate from the University of Adversity. When something bad happened (we broke-up for a while) she heed his advice to date some HOD from banking line. The worst is my Future F-I-L called him personally to invite him for all family gatherings... Long story short - Love is stronger than Qualifications. He is now blessed with 3 good looking and well behaved Grandkids and I'm his most trustworthy and loved his daughter, S-I-L. What I wanna say is we cannot choose our future S-I-L or D-I-L but we have to inculcate the right values to equip them with the maturity to make the right choices and decisions for themselves. In my opinion :) Getting married is no small matter unless the couple are willing and prepared to change spouse like changing cloth (not recommended, i am old school). Nationality aside, it is already a complex choice eg compatibility (physical, intelectual, emotional, euducation, concept of family, etc), common interests, family backgrounds, which country/culture to adopt, etc etc some of which are important, others are worth some thoughts though less important. As for nationality, it involves cultural differences, different ways of life. Unless both sides are clear about wha they are getting into and are prepared to adjust to each others, life can be tough coping with the changes. Not impossible to overcome, given time and patience, but if he/she has other better choices, why go this route. Ultimately, if they know what they are in for, and their love for each other is not wishy-washy, as parents we shouldnt stop them but help them see clearly what's in store for the rest of theri life, final decision is always theirs.
