actually after so much debate about going full time to show commitment, Ms Tin has clarified today that she is NOT becoming a MP full time. This came out in the Straits Times. Can't find the link but reproduced below:

Tin Pei Ling quits job but won't be full-time MP

By Amresh Gunasingham

Ms Tin says she will spend more time on her duties in MacPherson. Her last day as an Ernst & Young business consultant was Tuesday.

IN A surprise move, newly elected MP Tin Pei Ling has left her job as a business consultant at professional services giant Ernst & Young.

She announced the move in a post on her Facebook page yesterday, adding that her last day at the company was Tuesday.

In the post, she stated her intention to spend more time on her duties in the MacPherson ward of Marine Parade GRC, where the former grassroots activist was elected as an MP in the recent General Election.

But she told The Straits Times later that the resignation is not a prelude to her becoming a full-time MP.

'I am not going to be a full-time MP, but I'm (also) not looking for a new job,' she said.

She added that while considering her long-term plans, the next few months will be spent focusing on her constituency duties as well as on some community projects.

In her Facebook post, the 27-year-old described her previous job as an 'enriching and meaningful' experience.

As a senior associate at Ernst & Young Advisory, a business and management consultancy, her job scope involved, among other things, strategic thinking and planning, change management and performance management.

'I deeply appreciate the confidence and opportunities that the firm has given me over the years,' she said in the post.

Referring to MacPherson ward, she said: 'It has a large number of elderly and poorer households... They require and deserve more help and attention...

'I have decided to spend more time on the ground, to better serve the needs of residents, and to implement my plans for MacPherson.'

Earlier this month, Workers' Party chairman Sylvia Lim also announced that she had resigned from her job as a lecturer at Temasek Polytechnic, where she had taught for more than 12 years.

She said the move was prompted by an expected heavier workload as an MP for Aljunied GRC, where she was recently elected.

She also said then that her resignation did not mean that she would become a full-time MP, and that she was exploring career options which would give her more flexibility with her time.

Asked about her feelings on leaving her job yesterday, Ms Tin said: 'I feel a tinge of sadness as I enjoyed my job at Ernst & Young. But I believe my decision is the right one.'

Ms Tin's announcement generated much buzz online, with netizens posting several hundred messages in response.

On whether her resignation might mean a kick-start to plans to start a family, Ms Tin, who is married to Mr Ng How Yue, principal private secretary to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, said she has no 'immediate plans' to do so.

'My focus will be on the ground in MacPherson,' she said.

she started off badly and now caught between a rock and a hard place..

if she's not intending to be a full time MP and not looking for a new job..perhaps she might be tending to household duties

I do not know what she is doing man.. she quit job and don't want to be full-time MP? than she expect to do what? part-time MP walk here and there than finish.. go back..home or go out enjoy? Than when opportunity arise she will go find job again when people started to feel less dislike on her?

Cannot be right.. if she think like this.. more people will dislike her way of doing things.. once she decide to do something either do it or leave it.. and not always keep thinking of opportunity and than when time comes chiong to grab it.. it's not what Singaporeas wanted to see..

She of cause could enjoy no one would stop her.. but quit job and don't want to be a full-time MP , many people will not buy that.. if she quit her job and be a full-time MP than maybe people will start to give her some chance and see how she perform.. but now.. haiz..

Many singaporeans want sincere and down to ground MPs or Ministers and not those that in their mind is only about $.. and than no $ no talk.. that is not the way to do things for MPs or Ministers..

I was aghast when I read it in the news. She thinks after becoming MP, she can go into semi retirement mode. Get $15k per month for doing part time job. Rest of the time stay at home and be her tai tai. WTF!

Exactly. Quit but not be full time MP but to "explore" new career opportunities, does not go down well with the public especially when you have Sylvia setting the high standards.

But take a pinch of salt... she's only 27 yrs old, and it will be a waste if she stop work now and after 5 yrs later she not elected as MP how ??

The job market is not very forgiving one...

But I wish I have the option to quit and take it easy sometimes but I don't have a wife that is earning big bucks as PPS, only a housewife...

for all you know, PAP might be planning a role for her in some ministry or GLC that is why she quit?

hmm true.. but since she is very committed to her job.. she should make a decision and not let people think wa.. she quit job and still don't want to be full-time MP? Than many people will feel.. oh.. like that she is just doing for sake of doing things like pretend to listen to people only.. but when time pass and people more forgetful and she will start want to look for more opportunity outside?

Yes.. maybe 5 years down the road she maybe get voted out.. but hey..if she she could perform well as a MP but still get voted out.. I am sure many outside company will reconise that and she will very fast become high position in many outside company.. but if she keep let people feel she only out for $ and not really that sincere.. than that's it for her carrer..

I suggested it earlier in the thread, and after reading this it seems more likely - it sounds like she is going to start her own buisness consultancy.

I also suspect that part of the reason for the resignation is the mismatch in status between her role as a junior exec and as an MP which should equate to senior manager at the lowest.

Sylvia - for a laywer and lecturer to keep options open is understandable - she can quite genuinely consult in her area of expertise. Does TPL have that level of experience to become a genuine consultant?
