Tappet adjustment?

My car has a clattering or rattling sound in the engine when moving off from stand still. It happens when low rpm but if high rpm, there is no sound.

I send to WS to check and they deduce 1 of the piston might need to do tappet adjustment. And to do that, the job is tedious and need long hours as they said need to align all 4 pistons timing. Nothing will happen except some performance loss if I don't wish to rectify it. However, lately the sound is getting louder.

Will the engine get damaged if I continue to ignore the sound? Anyone with similar encounters care to share some comment? Thanks

If yr engine is a 4 cylinders 4 strokes, the common firing order is 1342, that means piston one will fire and follow by piston 3 and so on.

To do the tappet adjustments, you need to manually turn the engine ( remove all the spark plugs) over until piston 1 is on the top dead centre ( end of compression stroke). To determing whether the no1 is on end of compression stroke, look at no 4 piston tappet movements. The intake and exhaust tappet are on the "rock" that means one is moving upward the other is moving downward.

Once you are satisfied with the piston position , proceed to do the tappet adjustment with feeler gauge and the right wrench.

For me if it's slight sound, I will not bother to adjust.

Long term maladjustment of tappet clerance may damage other parts of yr engine.

 

If it is really the tappet, get it done asap. The satisfaction of a smooth engine is worth the effort.

mine is 4 cylinder, using 5w40 eo. Why is it higher rpm, I don't hear the sound?

The tapping sound just smoothen out into a rhythm of higher tampo.

But it is still there.

What petrol you using.?Can it be 'pinging' sound.??Most newer cars from the 90's onwards got self adjusting tappets,using oil pressure.

Is it loud? If not you can ignore it. Tappet noise is very common as car ages.

Actually hydraulic tappets will make noise as it ages. That one would need replacement rather than adjustment. Only solid tappets can be adjusted via shims.

i using 95 most of the time. I tried 98 & 92, the sound is still there

It isn't loud initially. Only recently the sound is getting louder. Mine is 5yr old car

mine is 9yr old, not that loud,but others have mention to me about it. i asked tanchong about it,the shim replacement has to be precise, each cylinder has different thickness in increments of 0.2mm, and there is no way to order a "set" of shims as each engine is set up differently. so have to strip engine head to measure each individual shim in order for me to get replacement shim....sounds damn tedious and labour intensive (costly)...other than replacing the whole head (easier way out), is there any workshops that are skilled to do such replacement??

Most likely your car using the self adjusting tappets,well,try changing your oil,see it is quieter.

Yes shimming is a very tedious process and it involves the use of specially designed tools.
