What car are you driving? But any WS should be able to do shim replacement. Its tedious because of the adjustment rather than installing it.

Btw, is your hydraulic or solid tappets? If hydraulic means have to replace. No shims.

R34 skyline, check with tan chong, there are 12 shims with various sizes to replace.

RB26 is using solid tappets so its using shims. Hence you have to change your shims.

Is it loud? If not you can ignore it. Tappet noise is very common as car ages.

my exhaust and ice covers ALL noise made by my car... [laugh]

Thanks for the compliment, but I am still a poor old salesman because most of the mechanics and shop owners don't like to hear the "hard truth" about the need to invest in specialty tools to improve mechanics' productivity and the need to invest in protective to take care of customers' cars under services/repairs.

Poor old salesman?? Like hell I will believe. I thought you have at least 10 cars at home and 5 mistresses?

that i agree...most workshops take the easy way out...if ur tappet got sound...they tell u must change the whole head...(easier to plug n play head, then measure each individual shim etc...)

My car has a clattering or rattling sound in the engine when moving off from stand still. It happens when low rpm but if high rpm, there is no sound.

I send to WS to check and they deduce 1 of the piston might need to do tappet adjustment. And to do that, the job is tedious and need long hours as they said need to align all 4 pistons timing. Nothing will happen except some performance loss if I don't wish to rectify it. However, lately the sound is getting louder.

Will the engine get damaged if I continue to ignore the sound? Anyone with similar encounters care to share some comment? Thanks [cool]

What car are you driving, and how old is it?

I think it is the other way round.

Car owners are just plain ignorant about how cars work esp in Singapore. This opens up opportunities for profiteering and misleading sales.

Caveat emptor.

And honestly Yeo is [thumbsup] . He discusses the right way to maintain a car.

We must try to offer help as best as we can to those who seek assistance or adv. It's of no use if one try to BS and point the wrong direction , everybody learns nothing. So for the good of everyone here lets help out as best as we can and don't use this forum to BS or show off .Only with this right attitude and approach then the forum can survive and progress. At the rate with so much unrelated topics being discuss everyday, I afraid the days for this forum will be numbered.
