CB Road hoggers

That is why you should not be in lane 1 if you want to travel at the speed limit. Cuz it is not wrong for the drivers to want to overtake you. As you mention it is wrong to drive in lane 1 unless overtaking. So if you drive in lane 1 while someone is trying to overtake you means you are wrong and the person behind you is right.

I believe Lane 1 for overtaking, doing right turn/U-turn. Nothing wrong about it if someone is trying to overtake. I believe it is safer for other to signal and undertake if Lane 2 is clear, then just brake and get rear-ended by tail-gaters.

So sorry, you seems to be confused about driving with the Highway Code.

Example: driving along a 3-lanes road, the speed limit is 70km/H.

If a car is travelling along Lane 2 at 70km/H. It is in acordance to the Highway Code.

If the car is travelling below below 70km/H along Lane 2, and others are overtaking and undertaking it, using Lane 1 at 70km/H and Lane 3. It can be considered to be road hogging along Lane 2.

Lane 3 is meant for those travelling below 70km/H (mostly below 50km/H). Those vehicles that used Lane 1 to overtook the below 70km/H car travelling in Lane 2, are not road hogging. However, if they continue travelling along Lane 1 after overtaking, then they are road-hogging (this is where RS intepreted wrongly).

Since you imply that I am confused regarding the Highway Code, let me ask you few simple questions:

a) Is undertaking taught in Highway Code?

b) Is undertaking right or wrong?

b) Do you sometimes undertake when a vehicle in Lane 1 and/or Lane 2 road hog?

Just curious.

Thanks.

So sorry, what I meant was road hogging can involve other than Lane 1 traffic (I am not a Driving Instructor, and you may want to check up with one). But I believe you just want to clear some doubts, and I am proud of you

Highway Code does mention undertaking

Undertaking can be dangerous due to confusion, as motorists are expected to overtake the Lane 2 and/or Lane 3 traffic (along 3-lanes road). The reason trafficator signalling before filtering is so useful/important to avoid assumption/imagination

However, undertaking can be among accident(s) avoidance techniques under certain traffic circumstances. Example: directed by TP to do so

When a vehicle in Lane 1 slowed down/stalled, the traffic in Lane 2 will appear to be undertaking

When a vehicle in Lane 2 slowed down/stalled, the traffic in Lane 3 will also appear to be undertaking

I hope these helps clear any doubt

Thanks for replying. Forget the driving instructors since this matter can be as controversial as matters pertaining to religion.

The only reason I asked was because of your respond (to my post #112) regarding hiway code with this statement "So sorry, you seems to be confused about driving with the Highway Code"

Basically, the hiway code says that it is wrong to overtake from the left i.e. undertaking if you will. Hence, my mention pertaining to hiway code which originated from:

1) Stiener's 1st post about hiway code "My points are made citing from final theory handbook 8th edition pt. 215 to 218."

2) My respond:"Let's not read out the riot act in the highway code book" & "Following Hi-Way code to the T reminds me of RS if you know whom I'm referring to." and finally;

3) Your respond: "So sorry, you seems to be confused about driving with the Highway Code"

Therefore, to summarise, it is a general understanding among drivers that:

Lane 1 is mainly for overtaking

Lane 2 is for traveling at speed limit indicated

Lane 3 is for traveling at or below speed limit

Needless to say, with the exception of lane 3 which speed limit is relative to the vehicle max speed limit and drivers reason for traveling below speed limit (particularly to heavy laden vehicles); vehicles traveling below speed limit along lane 1 & 2 which obstructs an overtaking vehicle will be deemed to be road hogging.

If rear vehicle intends to overtake while traveling along:

1) Lane 3, overtaking should be done on lane 2 or lane 1 whichever is available to do so

2) Lane 2, overtaking should be done on lane 1 (when vehicles on lane 2 & 3 are already traveling at their respective speed limit) but not at lane 3

3) Lane 1, overtaking (undertaking) should not be done at lane 2 unless lane 1 is being road rogged

Hence, while undertaking is dangerous, following the hiway code to the T doesn't make sense when common sense should prevail for compelling reasons. Yes?

Let's practice safe, courteous, sensible and responsible driving so that driving on our roads can be more pleasant and safe for all road users.

Have a nice day! [wave]

I understand the frustrations drivers experienced when they come up behind CB hoggers on lane 1. But there are just as many CB drivers who start to tailgate CB hoggers on lane 1. This is not the right or safe way to get the hoggers off the lane. It's not worth the risks.

Drive safe.

I fully agree that tailgating should be avoided AT ALL TIMES as it is DANGEROUS as well as IT DOES NOT GUARANTEE a road hogger will give way.

It is best to use common sense when overtaking/undertaking for whatever reasons without risking anyone.

Today I was driving along AYE. A Malaysian Volvo in the right lane in front of me. Signal right briefly, and the guy moved over within 30 sec. Put up my hand as I passed to thank him.

Next in line was a Sg teksi. Did the same thing, no response. Flash light, no response.

Just a typical day, I guess. Looks like our "developed" country citizens need to do a little more "developing" to reach MY standards.

Lane 1 ethics is all about speed. If rear car is coming fast or tailgating like in hurry and your front is empty, just buzz left. Everyone will be happy.

And to cars going fast, my experience all these years tell me if u flash light without any effects, just overtake. There are really lame people on the road so the faster u get away from them, the less irritated you'll become.

Above shows how well mannered both the Volvo driver and you are and the poor attitude of the teksi driver.

Often I will do the same i.e. to acknowledge someone who gives way because it never fails to make me feel good to acknowledge a courtesy.

Have a nice day! [wave]

Lame people how to go fast when they are limping? [laugh]

This is true: the faster u get away from them, the less irritated you'll become.

Thanks, appreciate your kind comments, but I consider my behaviour to be the least that I could've done - very natural behaviour, a minimal standard. Unfortunately, standards of behaviour on our roads are generally so poor that even that gets called "good". :D

i'm very curious to know what did u do after the volvo gave way..did u filter back to lane 2 like some theorists said? or continue to travel in lane 1 like most drivers do?

As a matter of fact, there was noone behind me, and I was travelling much faster than other traffic (I was overtaking everything on the middle lane at a rapid rate). But if I had slowed down or if someone faster had appeared behind me, I would surely have filtered back into the middle lane without delay.

It's not that noone should be in the right lane. It's that noone should *block* someone faster by being in the right lane. Meaning that if someone faster comes up in the right lane, give way with alacrity (and a signal for safety). This applies regardless of the speed, or the legality of the speed. It doesn't matter how fast *you're* going, or how fast *you* think the other driver *should* be going. Someone's catching up to you on the right lane, signal and move over. End of story. This is the message that roadhoggers seem incapable of getting through their rather thick skulls.

It is also poor form to remain in the right lane and match the speed of the middle lane even if there's no traffic behind one on the right lane. It's only if you're actively overtaking middle lane traffic that you remain eligible to drive on the right lane. And when I say "actively overtaking", I mean doing so with purpose, maintaining at least +20km/hr over the traffic in the middle lane so that you pass them quickly rather than what lots of people seem to love doing - maintaining something like +3km/hr and craaaawling past the middle lane traffic. In that circumstance, they might as well keep to the middle lane. In any case, once one is done overtaking, and wishes to slow down, one should move back to the slower lane.

Nice try, though. :D
