Vulcann 6th Gear May 8, 2012 Share May 8, 2012 (edited) Yes thats correct. Despite the best efforts of the Marines to reach out to these people; they even got a japanese fellow civilian to speak through loudspeakers that it was okay to come out, the Americans will give you food and water etc, Marine footage capture a lone woman leaping to her death in the face of the Americans. Excuse my language but the interpretation of the Bushido code by the beasts then was reall BS to me and this not only resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of their soldiers but also multiples of that number of civilian deaths both off and on the Japan main island. Happily1986 5th Gear May 8, 2012 Share May 8, 2012 (edited) In one of the pacific island landings, the US top brass in command of the amphibious assault force miscalculated the depth of the tides surround the coral atolls. the amphibious attack craft required 4 feet but clearance was up to 3 feet, As a result, Marines from the first attack wave were forced to disembark several yards from the shoreline. Many died as result of direct volleys from mortars, howitzers and MGs. Not to mention that some amphibious crafts got stuck on the outlying waters and got blasted to bits literally. the LL thing was that the top command having realised their mistake, immediately called off the attack. So the survivors from the first wave were left stranded to hold their tiny beachhead alone with no reinforcements till the following day. Actually i believe after the battle of midway and the naval clash at the Philippine sea, the Japanese changed tack and realised that they could not hope to desist American assaults on the pacific islands. Except for the battle at Saipan, the Japanese defenders were outnumber at every amphibious landing cum island taking. The change in tack materialised in the form of a new policy; to take down and inflict as much losses as possible so as to force a war of attrition. CKP 3rd Gear May 8, 2012 Share May 8, 2012 (edited) IIRC the IJA did not have medium tanks in the Pacific theatre but possed lightly-armoured small tanks mounting a small caliber gun. Against infantry these agile steel beasts were excellent but against AT guns or Shermans they were dead meat... Eh you are right... I remembered wrongly it was a light tank Ha Go, not medium... "but against AT guns or Shermans they were dead meat..." Just like shermans were dead meat to any main enemy battle tanks in the european theater... And the same thing of outright slaughter on the beaches happened on June 6, 1944 as well during Operation Overlord, otherwise known as D-Day to most folks. It was luck that the German forces facing the Allies were reduced in number and Rommel was on home leave then. And also the defenders there were assuming that the invasion, if there was one, would not be on the beaches of Normandy but elsewhere. Otherwise the outcome of the European compaign might have been different...

One of the biggest reasons why the higher ups was confident enough to order D Day was because they felt that they have already decimated the Luftwaffe sufficiently including the destruction of supposed factories churning out warplanes. they wouldn't dare assault the beaches without seriously denting the might of the Luftwaffe. We know the Kriegsmarine was embarrassing save for their annoying U boats. Basically the fact that D Day happened meant that the air was being dominated by the allies. I felt that continental europe was destined to fall after the Luftwaffe was whittled down. Edited May 8, 2012 by Happily1986

The change in tack materialised in the form of a new policy; to take down and inflict as much losses as possible so as to force a war of attrition. Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto was the first commander who fully comprehen the industrial might of the US and predicted correctly that his forces would be able to run amok for six months after Pearl but after that it would be hell to pay. I think the IJA generals were fully aware like you said of the impossibility of winning the war then and thus resorted to fanatical resistances till the last man on every island they occupied, all at the cost in terms of lives and limbs to both the attackers, defenders and innocent civilains, hoping to bleed the Americans dry. Bushido? BS! And they had to swallow both the Fat Man and Little Boy "toys" at the costs of hundreds of thousands of lives lost... Incidentally did you read how Yamamoto was assassinated? Wondered why the Americans never made a movie outa this hitting below-belt though brilliant militarily sneak attack. Would love to see the P38s in action! I felt that continental europe was destined to fall after the Luftwaffe was whittled down. Agree. The Luftwaffe was really a shadow of its former self and Donitz's U-boats were decimated when their Enigma machines' codes were broken. And the Eighth had been pounding German cities at day while the RAF bombing them at night literally obliterated their war factories. Plus their oil fields at Romania was also whacked very hard and the critical fuel vital to the war effort suddenly run dry. One of the major factors was that if that nutcase never contemplated whacking Unker Joseph and actually doing it, the outcome might be different as well. And of course if the Me262s came online say a year or two earlier, the outcome of the war might be altered as well. Many ifs...
Joseph22 Turbocharged May 8, 2012 Share May 8, 2012 MCF has its own J22, which is more versatile and high tech than either jets. The only drawback to J22 is the poor accuracy (1%) of its weapon systems. However, a J22 fighter typically makes up for its very poor accuracy by firing continuously from its unlimited weapons payload, like in a game or animation. The unique weapons bay of a J22 fighter allows it to spit out continuous bursts of cannon fire, and massacre its opponents with volleys of 200 missiles. this is pretty accurate already. now a day a lot of ppl are shooting blanks. A pair of P-38s were dispatched to finish him off no doubt thanks to the breaking of the Japanese naval codes. What happened later was a drama that spanned many years that eventually shadowed the event itself. I can't remember the name of these two guys but basically only one guy took down the plane and the other person claimed the credit for it. Very sad because everyone seemed to believe the bluff and the real McCoy was only vindicated many years later when the wreckage was examined. The tua kang i think passed away before the truth was uncovered. Edited May 8, 2012 by Happily1986

Bystander50 5th Gear May 9, 2012 Share May 9, 2012 A vehicle seen in a North Korean military parade has become the focus of attention amid suggestions the design or technology may have come from China. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-17781085 No doubt the technology may come from PRC, I have serious doubts of their quality, especially when everything in there can be faked. On top of that, god knows what kind of hazardous chemicals they soak the materials into to make it look presentable on consumers. My wife used to work in a lab testing consumer products from China, from t-shirts to toys, most of their paints have high lead content.

If Yamamoto was not taken out and remained the Combined Fleet's commander, the Pacific compaign might had dragged on further but the inevitable outcome of ultimate defeat would still surface and possibily with more death and destruction. Given the industrial might of the US, it was a matter of time that Imperial Japan would be brought to her knees, with or without the two Atomic bombs. It was the greatest and most costly conflict mankind had ever witnessed and likely to never happen again. I hope. ↡ Advertisement
