Ruriimasu 1st Gear June 29, 2012 Share June 29, 2012 1 of my relay fuses was found to have blown up. The workshop (which I had never been to before) charged me $70 for it. Labour inclusive, just like to know whether that was a reasonable price so I know whether I can go back to them in future. Thanks! ↡ Advertisement

Dafansu Turbocharged June 29, 2012 Share June 29, 2012 I believe there's few type of relay. I changed my aircon relay fuse before at a air-con shop, including installation will be $
5936 1st Gear June 29, 2012 Share June 29, 2012 (edited) Relay and fuse are different items. Most circuits use the normal 20A rating relays are only a few dollars. Give it a $20 for the branded one. Some times relays are included in the packages for horns, amplifier, and lighting ballast kits, etc. For the higher amphere ratings, it will cost more. So I think the bill may be high side on labour. Ruriimasu 1st Gear June 29, 2012 Author Share June 29, 2012 (edited) its the bigger one.. for tail and front small lights to be specific. i know fuses are cheap and he did troubleshoot to find the exact problem. so give and take, inclusive of labour, this price reasonable or not? i will not bitch if that is high, just want to know if they are a workshop which I can go back to in future. thanks! 5936 1st Gear June 29, 2012 Share June 29, 2012 This are relay is not fuse. There are different things. Fuse for circuit safeguard. Relays are like 'magnetic switches' to turn on/off high current drawing circuits. Agreed, Sometimes it's just paying for peace of mind, and solving problem faster. The price is high, but not extreme. keep ithem as KIV, dont cut the rope yet.
Kb27 Supersonic June 29, 2012 Share June 29, 2012 You can get a 20A automotive relay for $5 at a parts store. That's more than enough even for a 60W headlight, which draw about 5A. Unless you get "customized" relay which may costs a bit more. You pay some $ for labour, but $70 is stretching it a bit too far.

Tigershark1976 Turbocharged June 30, 2012 Share June 30, 2012 (edited) I think the workshop is charging labour cost for troubleshooting as well.... Thats Y my WS told me they dont like to do troubleshooting work that is too complicated. My customer complained to be that his civic have some weird sound when travelling at certain speed. I brought him to my workshop and the boss test drive the car and told him to bear with it. He didnt charge a single cents for the troubleshooting.... When the customer left, I ask the boss, why didn't he took the business. he ask me a question... if he spend a whole day troubleshoot and found that its just a bolt or nut that's loose... how much is he suppose to charge? $5 or $$300?? if he charge $5, who is going to pay for his 1 man day cost? if he were to charge $300, how is he gg to explain to the customer that what he did was just to tighten a bolt for the $300 charges?? Caravan 5th Gear June 30, 2012 Share June 30, 2012 Troubleshooting and diagnosis is a skill not every mechanic has. Especially if the offending part is well hidden from sight. If you go AD, they will charge you by the hour just for finding out the problem. It's like seeing a doctor or lawyer, too bad the mechanic's skill is not so highly recognised.
