FYI aircon consist of main components like

-compressor(connected by belt to a magnetic clutch, belt driven by engine),

-cooling coil or evaporator,

-relief valve and

-the fan.

How aircon works is pretty straight forward. Fan blows air towards a radiator-like coil which is cold and cooled air comes out of the diffusers(air vents).

The compressor or pump is to circulate the aircon gas around the system. The relief valve is to rapidly cool the aircon gas much like releasing deodorant from a spray can continuously, you will see a thin layer of ice form outside the can, that's how it works, sudden release in pressure rapidly cooling the aircon gas.... before it's entered into the coil.

I dunno wtf you guys are smelling but again FYI aircon gas is not only colourless it's also odourless. Did you check your car thoroughly? Maybe someone is hiding in your car and gave out a really smelly fart.

If you smell stale/mouldy/sweaty odour, try changing your aircon air filter. If it's a washable type take it out rinse with water and put it under the sun to dry. Smell could be the moisture accumulated on the filter from a series of cold weather.

Aircon not cold could be one of the components not working properly.

-The magnetic clutch: listen for the activation and deactivation clicks, if no clicks at all means not working.

-The relief valve: needs a aircon mechanic to check as it could be due to wear and tear due to age, it can be replaced.

-The coil: can last for a long time, do not leak easily unless it's your car model's common problem or you recently had an accident. You can sent it for chemical wash as in wash the coil exterior and pressure test after many years of usage.

-The compressor: make sure it has enough lubricant. If compressor kick in you feel a lot of vibration and very loud, go fill it up with compressor oil. It will last for a long time if properly lubricated.

-The radiator fan: If the fan cooling your main radiator is not working your aircon will be affected, this depends on your car model, some cars has a seperate fan cooling the aicon system alone.

BTW,

The Coil - There are two coils, known as Condensor and Evaporator.

Relief valve - proper term is known as TEV, thermal expansion valve.

There is also a filter dryer in the cooling system. [;)]

I know, I just want to keep it simple as not many can understand. The condenser is usually installed with the main radiator, using just one radiator fan. Usually to the untrained eye many cannot see it. Many are not tech ppl, so layman terms and simple as possible. Looking at the smell and terms ppl use, no wonder they kenna chop carrothead.

Condenser fan will run when air on turn on? Or only kicks in when the temp is hot?

Depends on make n model. Some come with two fans, some one big fan. If two fans, the one for a/c will cut in only when desired temp not reached.

I see. Cos mine the mech check say fan not running. Check relay all ok. So I also not sure if its only kick in when reach certain temp. Or shld I ask them to kiv this? According to them say condensor fan shld run when air on is switch on

Then ask ur mechanic to connect another fan see if the fan will turn.

i change AC filter every 15K KM.

now i start the engine, drive off for about 10-15secs then turn ON AC. No foul smell in this way.

Mine got 2 fans with 2 speeds. Ac on both come on low speed. When engine temp too high both run faster.
