Jman888 Moderator August 5, 2012 Share August 5, 2012 I kind of agree with the TS. For a small country like Singapore, what are the chances we can win those games that involve "racing"? Sports like swimming, athletics, etc...is going to be very difficult for us to win anything. I know some say China, Japan and S. Korea can do it, but what is their population size against us? Games like archery, shooting, bowling, fencing, diving etc...could have been easier because you need focus, dexterity, mental strength, etc and less physical attributes such as strength and power. Look at those top archers from S. Korea .....most are obese. We should focus on those sports that gives us good chance despite our physique limitation rather than trying everything all over the shop and hope to get a star out of those. that wouldn't be too difficult but focus, dexterity, mental strength is not for the people best know for whining and complaining [laugh] ↡ Advertisement

Freestylers09 5th Gear August 6, 2012 Share August 6, 2012 Well, isn't this why Singapore is importing so many foreign players ? To close the gap for the lack of a sportsmanship culture here, and hopefully the locals will catch up in 10-20 years. We whine so much, about population, about no funds, about no support, when we know our culture only encourage spending on academics, tuition classes, gifted education program, .., don't honor athletes or even creative people. Stop whining, reflect and start with oneself, one own family and one own children. hmmm..what is related with different sports and FT issue importing? Freestylers09 5th Gear August 6, 2012 Share August 6, 2012 For that matter, based on what I read, LCW did what our early foreign import THL did. He followed his father to the badminton hall and grew an interest. Then he was spotted at the local badminton hall. Same with THL, his friends asked if he wants to go to the gym and he grew an interest and started training, that's it. The coach only comes later, not the opposite. Neither LCW nor TLH had to wait for a coach or teacher to tell him "start playing badminton, pay you salary". isnt this same as most pro soccer players? or like Jordan etc? but kana spotted to play professional then is another questions thats why i said our systems is abit different la..piangz

Freestylers09 5th Gear August 6, 2012 Share August 6, 2012 (edited) okay say an individual is very good talent in shooting or archery but no one or organization support this game to groom and send to world stage how this star going to be spotted and shine? same like LCW and rest pro, their interest become a big talent without spotted in someway by scouts or group playing such sports, how do they show their talents? if like that, tmr can i think i can good enough,i send my application in? if all individuals can do it, i think many clubs very busy liao..lol this what i mean la.. Jman888 Moderator August 6, 2012 Share August 6, 2012 Our school PE teachers are supposed to be the first line of "talent spotting". Of course, during my days, the PE teachers are normally part-time teachers from other academic subjects. Maybe the PE teachers are more professional now. I know we still have a 3rd world mentality of think negatively of sports or subjects that are not taught in class. Same answer, different method also wrong, how to become world champion ? school was never a serious place to spot sporting talent, period. the school is not interested and neither do the teacher/principal etc. not only they dun encourage, they KILL the interest/talent it them. Jim 1st Gear August 6, 2012 Share August 6, 2012 The problem with Singapore is the narrow definition of success. Even ministers feel inadequate if they dont get paid millions. If Tan Howe Liang is any example, it is a terribly negative one. In any other country, he would have been a celebrated hero. In Singapore, his existence is almost an embarassment for a government that placed economic success above all else. Singaporean sportsmen have to constantly do the balance schooling and sports, because the country will not care about you once you stop being a medal hopeful. Hopefully, your chosen sports is still the flavour of the day and maybe still get some funding, and only then, maybe you can get by with coaching work....maybe. But of course, the other extreme can happen, when a sports is overfunded and young Singaporeans trained hard and sacrificed everything only to get squeezed out when the foreign talents get bought in.... I mean brought in. Not to mention inflexibility of NS, except for Patrick Tan, will mean the two most crucial years of a young man will be lost. Freestylers09 5th Gear August 6, 2012 Share August 6, 2012 if u want to do it, u have to prepare for all things that u will fail or struggle, that's what i read about some entrepreneurs autography, most got same quote..haha! thats why we never do it or achieve it coz here is simply u cannot afford to lose..
