  1. 1. Do you agree to dual citizenship to counter the adverse effects of our declining birth rate & ageing population?

Nope, too many people had to serve before they were allowed to drop. I believe the key is that they must not have enjoyed any "benefits" after 12 years old, if not, they MUST serve before they can drop.

Seen too many who were doing their NS while their families had already left for good. And one guy I know haven't lived in SG for 10 years, have no intention to return to SG to live and was still asked to serve NS.

You are right, the proper way to do it is to

1) NOT carry a Spore passport after 13yr of age.

2) Inform Spore immigration & CMPB of renounce intention at age 13yr old

3) Carry your child Aussie passport to SIR and stamp "free entry" on foreign passport

4) Inform CMPB again at age 16 yr for enlistment but defer enlistment pending renouncement at age 21 yr old

5) at age 21yr old, come back and renounce citizenship.

after that then your child can be a free man.

Thats only if your kid is born in SG. And you can renounce without having to go back, just mail all the documents to them. But, its on a case by case basis for males, so if they want to play punk you also can't do anything.

Yap you are right, I heard there are no SOP also, just case by case basis but according to all my Ex-Singaporeans friends, this is how they do it.

if your kid are not born in Spore then no issue at all if you don't register him as Singaporean. for me i got 2 boys, both Spore born that why have to be very careful when dealing with them.

i dont see the problem with serving NS. There are risks involved but this is a necessary sacrifice for all Singaporean sons to protect the people we love so much

Yes, I suspect there's no SOP too. IIRC, I was informed that I would get my Aus citizenship in April about 2 months prior, which was when I started contacting Canberra High Commission and SG Customs etc about renouncing my citizenship, but I was given the run around till I chanced upon this "MadScientist" on the SG Expat Forum in June who gave me a name to contact. Otherwise I will probably still be running around trying to get rid of the IC and passport now. Took a good 4 months before they sent me a certificate confirming that I renounced my SG citizenship.

I reckon you should just assume that they will be liable for NS so anything less is a bonus. A friend's younger brother left before he was 12 and still had to go back to serve 2 years despite the fact that he's obviously not staying in SG. With the way things are going now, I won't be surprised if they amend the "rules" such that all Singaporeans regardless of genders have to serve NS. Just my 2 cents...

except the sacrifice is turning into a mockery.

i dont think it is mockery at all. My own son is serving in uniform right now.

when you go ICT and you meet with fellow mates, some of them are not doing well and you think to yourself, this is not right.

And also, your own service is your own sacrifice paid. your son's service is dues from himself, not for or on behalf of the father's.

Hypothetically, even if you wanted, you are powerless to exempt your son from doing NS. Unless you mean he is a regular.

Actually yes he wants to sign on as a regular and I am proud of that. One day we will have 3 or 4 or even a long line of men in our family all serving in uniform.

Being able to bear arms for your country is one of the proudest things you can do. Its not a burden or liability. It should be an honour. If you run away from this how many harder things will you run away from in life

some people just like the idea of bearing arms. some just like to play it on a computer.

everyone to their own.

no body said anything about about running away, the mockery is that you can't.

Well like it or not we as Singaporean males all have to do it. And regardless of what the laws say whether you left before 12 or whatever, I dont think its very right to "avoid" it or discuss ways on how to avoid it when we have people coming back just to serve if for nothing

while that may be the case, the fact that these loop holes are not closed and double standards exists shows how much the laws are enforced. Remember Melvin Tan? so many other cases of double standards.. it is a slap on the face of those who are conscripts.

The regulars are paid, it is what they signed up for. it is a totally different case. wwe all know the types who sign on. and because you signed on, can you be sure you are not looking through tinted glass?

These are the keywords between staying or quitting. That's the hard truth! No prize for guessing who is which in this thread. [laugh]

He told me "Dad, as long as its enough money to live reasonably well i dont mind doing this everyday. I feel very happy in uniform and there's no place else id rather be. Furthermore someone has to do it. If not us then who else.

If you have served through your NS stint, you would know that regulars are not paid much at the lower-middle ranks. Just enough to get by. If you count the hours they work, per hour they work for far less than most comfy office jobs out there.

So very simply all these double standards and loopholes should be stamped out.

There are thousands of Singapore-born Singaporeans who run away from NS. I meet them in Malaysia, I meet them in Europe, I meet them in U.S. So what ? Other people eat sh*t doesn't we eat sh*t too. Whether you choose to serve and forget or serve for honor, it's up to you. Most of those who ran away never step foot on this island again in their life.

More than serving, it builds you up as a person and teaches you so many character lessons which will serve you well in your life in future even if you dont stay on in the service.

Shame on those who run away and try to justify their absence while putting down those who choose to sacrifice everything.

Just like those draft evaders in WW2 or Vietnam. How silly. Without the security of arms how can you have anything else. All these things we take for granted everyday

They'd better not, those of us who sacrifice like us and our children and our children's children are better off not protecting sycophantic scum like those who evade the draft

loopholes and double standards should be stamped out. you do know that SAF pilots training in US, when their children born there get US citizenship. list goes on.

lower-middle ranks? as in 1st SG and below? if you count all the other allowances, its actually a lot more than what many make outside. you cannot compare to office jobs as those jobs are white collar work which always command high salaries.. or are you refering to the low level office staff types? in that case the pay is always stuck around 2-4k. not much better and certainly not much to get by. own lunch, own transport, and own office clothes.

What I disagree with is the 3 year/6 year contract thing. anyway that's another story.
