When people use the term "dry lay", it means lay out all the tiles to see whether the client can accept the overall floor finishing before actual laying. It is often used for stones laying where the pattern, colour of each tile varies - it may also apply to tiles as well depending on the type of chosen done. If each of the homogenous tiles are consistent in colour or pattern, there is no need to do any dry laying.

It can be done on actual site or off site in the factory.

To my understanding, dry lay is not a way to adhere the tiles.

So dry is static display?

yes, you are right.

Once the dry lay is done, the tiler will number on the back of each tile/stone. Then he will do the actual laying according to the numbering on the actual area to achieve the finished pattern approved earlier.

The choosing (and installation) of the stone is very subjective as no 2 stone looks alike - a lot of argument/dispute can arise between contractor and client if the client does not like the pattern installed. So it is prudent to seek approval from the client first before actual installation.

Hmm..can I say that dry lay is just to have a preview of the end product, afterwhich proceed with wet lay method to confirm it.

I do heard pop up of tiles may occur if do the wet lay method, whereas dry lay will not..however dry lay is more time consuming. Anyone to verify this myth ?
