Thanks for sharing, bro! Someday I wish to do the same as you too!

Btw, you can drive in LHR vehicles to RHD vehicles....was it difficult to get used to it ? Especially the signal stalk, the gear level, accelerator pedal....and keeping to right side of the road (for LHD vehicles) ??

[:)]

I am on a 15 days driving trip in tiong kok now doing 500km per day, when I come back SGP later, I think I will drive on the wrong side !!!

I need my front passenger to help me check on coming cars before overtaking as I am driving a RHD car in this LHD country.

It depends on you.....I mean your hands !! [rolleyes]

If your hands aren't auto-roaming her.....its safe as she can concentrate on the road (for you). If your hands are...then [dead]

Yes, they requested for an International Driving Permit when I rented a car in Taiwan. I emailed the car rental company before going to confirm. I also got an IDP for U.S. For Australia and NZ, I just used my Singapore Driving License and it was ok. Best is to email the car rental company to check. Perhaps, some are more fussy?

Anything else you neéd her to do when you are the driver??

IDP is an International treaty signed by participating countries, so technically you need an IDP for ANZ, US but usually they don't enforce it. For Taiwan, you need it because they expect your license to be in Chinese and the IDP is basically a book translating your license information into many different languages.

ASEAN has a separate agreement to recognize each other's driver's license. But for the same reason, you still would rather use an IDP especially when English is not an official language in many ASEAN countries. It may well save you from trouble.

HK and mainland are the same country, so don't see why not. It also happens every day between UK and Europe. Also common between Thailand and Cambodia/Laos.

Has anyone rented a car to self drive in China as a foreigner? It seems this is not allowed.

It's near impossible to drive a foreign registered car legally in middle kingdom, but somehow HK cars are the exception. Maybe these HK cars need special permit?

Maybe she can keep her (moaning) volume down, so as not to distract the driver... [lipsrsealed]

Yes, generally HK vehicle owners need a special licence plate to drive in China, and this is generally limited to Guangdong (the vehicle with have a second licence plate below the HK one, which is black with white numbers and bears the Chinese character 粵, referring to Guangdong).

Generally one needs to have a registered company in China with a net worth or capital over a certain amount to be eligible for a cross-border plate.

Recently the government introduced self-drive holidays for HKers to drive in South China, but there's apparently a quota and only a small number of people can go in each day. But the scheme has been far less popular than expected.

Not that it is not allowed, but it is not straightforward. PRC does not recognize IDP because ROC already signed the treaty in the 1960's (PRC replaces ROC in U.N. after 1971) and still participates in IDP. Depends on the city you are arriving in , in most cases, you need to convert first to China license by taking basic theory. To qualify for basic theory, you might need to have at least 6-month short term stay visa. By left, ... just do it.

Apparently the China license I am now using to drive there in Aug is a limited duration one, given to me by someone who fixes such thing ----- a typical 'by left' method of getting things done
