Indeed .... electronically controlled adaptive dampers but norm is primarily speed only and not lateral and longitudinal adjustment with g sensors like Tein's edfc active pro .. yet to be seen.

when (if) the Sports model is launched in Singapore with the 1.8T offering 300Nm of torque, it will be even more driveable. the e-boxer now is a bit of a joke with insufficient batt power.

better cars are different in needs/budget/definition for all drivers. 

e.g. for me now if Hyundai launches the Tuscon with 1.6T hybrid total >220bhp and close to 20km/l and all the safety features like Korean domestic car, yes that would be a better car compared to even a Merc GLB/GLC (of cos the infotainment cannot match Merc)...

I think their e-boxer is a misguided attempt at best...with minimal fuel savings.

At worst, its pure marketing gimmick to "save the earth"

I think Subaru can definitely and will do better in their next attempt since they have the backing of Toyota and Toyota hybrids are excellent.

Whatever the motivation that Subaru has for introducing the e-boxer, they are introducing this in a big way in Europe. You can only get the e-boxer Forester in Europe, not the non-hybrid version. It could be an interim model to portray Subaru as a having a hybrid there where the green movement is more active. I agree that Subaru is probably working on a better hybrid version. 

I was surprised to find out that the mild-hybrid was introduced in the US in 2013 tor thereabout in the CrossTrek/XV hybrid.  The difference is that the electronic displays were a little dated that what they have now and the battery was Ni-MH and not Li-ion. I am sure some of the components are newer and better but the idea is not new.

Hi all,

I'm new here, and am planning to buy my first car ever (also, I'm a foreigner, so I don't know the common etiquette of car shopping here^^). Hoping to get some advice on whether I should buy a Forester 2015/ 2016 (5-year-old car) on:

- Whether it's worth it (read a few posts, seem to be the only SUV in this price range with such offerings)

- What are the expected costs and what I should prepare / look out for when hunting for a used Forester?

- Any recommendation on mechanics / showrooms that would be great.

I have a small family (wife + 2 y/o toddler). I know Forester might not be the most practical choice for my use case (commute to work, pick & drop kid off, weekend trips visiting friends / malls / outings), but I like the space it offers, design, and always wanted to own a Subaru.

Any Forester lover who would like to offer me their 2 cents? Cheers!

I liked the forester too but after reading the above few posts (quoted in this reply), I have removed it from my list. Now considering Mazda 6, Camry (from PI) and Mercedes Benz A class as they are all in the similar price range but not SUV.

Just my personal experience. I have a 4-year-old NA (i.e the non-Turbo version). Mileage is in the low 50,000Km. Most of the driving were done in the city roads with a few trips up North all the way up to Penang. I am happy with the Forester and I think most owners here are - if they are ok with the shortcomings. The FC is not that good - this cannot be helped because of the weight and the all-time 4WD. My previous car was a 2.5L monster of a SUV so for me, the FC of the Forester was lower. The design is not super cool but it is a Subaru and the interior is sufficiently spacious and boot more than adequate for short trips.

My only major problem was the air-con. I think this was a batch problem as I read a number of people reporting this problem. But the failure occurs very early and I think the warranty replacement solved the problem. 

The ride is very planted and controlled because of the AWD and the low centre-of-gravity boxer engine. It is a very utilitarian vehicle and if I am looking for a replacement the Forester would definitely be in the shortlist.

One thing to note is that if you are looking at the 2015/16 Forester, you may be looking at the SH version which is one version earlier than the one I have which is the SJ. The SJ has some improvements. The window glass is supposed to be thicker so there is less traffic noise and there are some minor differences in the instrument clusters. Other than that it should be nearly the same. With any old car, maintenance cost may be an issue - this is normal.

Purchasing a car is always a compromise of up-front cost, maintenance cost, features and design. Look at what is important for you when you make your decision. Good luck!

you might wanna consider GoodYear ASY5. i have Primacy 4 on my XV and one thing i hate about it is the thread pattern keeps getting small stones lodged inside. never had such issue with my previous ASY3. and dry grip on Primacy 4 will still loose out to ASY3 based on how i remember them.

I replaced mine with Tourador 22/60/R17'Comfort SUV. Probably I am not a fussy driver, but they are not noisy and the grip is just as good as the original tyres that they replaced. Only time will tell how long they last but I am completely happy with them so far and at $340 for a set of 4 they are half the price of other brands and I can replace them earlier if I need to.

I would said that Forester is not an idiot proof car model from my personal opinion. Need some basic understanding of car maintenance for Forester and also follows the servicing intervals religiously.

I am looking for a >200bhp, non-FWD and as low cost as possible car when I am looking around for the replacement of my previous car.

Hi iwonder,

Dun bother with mazda 6 or A class, go for the camry hybrid at different league  .. 2.5l and electric motor for strong pickup and great price from PI as well as little concern on warranty with Toyota.

Not a SUV I prefer and invested too much on my fxt else I would jump to camry in a heartbeat.

Any car is quite idiot proof unless one drives senselessly or do not keep to regular servicings. and one doesnt need to  understand anyting about car maintenance.

of course the usually hengsway thing will come in.

 

the only wary of using a car is one of DCT gearbox. the way it behaviours, it really needs drivers to be educated.
