KIA Stinger GT

Oh wow [laugh]

You'd realise the Stinger isn't tuned very aggressively, in terms of throttle response even in Sports mode.. esp. if your Audi is the Quattro version. The 8AT also somewhat dulls the acceleration feel.. compared to a lightning quick DCT.

(Haha need to pre-empt first that this is my last permitted post until tomorrow afternoon - forum policy I guess).

Yes the Stinger has a bit of lag. Gear shifts aren’t as smooth as well. I guess a sprint booster can take care of the lag.

I was most impressed with the build quality and driving dynamics of this car - at this price.

The car is solidly put together. I popped into a cerato and closed the door to compare - totally different from Stinger, which closed with a solid “vacuum feel” thump. It’s almost like stinger is the lexus of KIA, build quality wise. Sound insulation is very good too.

The car also has a very nice driving position - you can sit low with the steering right in front of you. The steering is light but still with abundant feedback. The car feels planted and sharp through corners.

What I would have liked is a smoother gearbox and better audio system though.

On balance, it is a great car at this price. Solidly built, fast enough and spacious. I guess the work of Audi’s lead designer and BMW’s M division’s chief engineer can’t be that shoddy !

Iâm driving a company issued car now (rental company buy car and rent to my company). Itâs an Audi A5 2.0 sportback. Used to take allowance and bought my own cars - had enough fun over the years Liao ! ð

Nice. For such cars, does it come with the PHV decal?

Good points. It's just a great package all around.

But regarding noise insulation.. or rather NVH - Above 130km/h the Stinger lose out to entry level conti like Bmw 3er, MB C-class or Audi A4 liao  [:)]

No it doesn’t. It’s just like if you were to rent a car for long term drive. Companies that provide cars to employees nowadays prefer to rent cars instead of buying them outright to avoid having capitalizing the car in their balance sheet.

Actually there are performance luxury cars that use a "standard" 8-speed automatic as opposed to a DCT.

A good example is the Lexus GS-F.

The reason is that for a wide variety of driving conditions (including being stuck in jams, etc), an automatic beats a DCT in simplicity and reliability, even if it may be less "engaging" of a transmission.

I thought the latest 8-speed ZF automatic that BMW uses is the best right now... some were commenting that it's as good as a dual clutch, with super fast response and minimal lag? Anyway I think I also see a trend of moving back to automatic gearboxes vis a vis dual clutches due to significant improvements in automatic gearboxes... they're simply more reliable due to lower complexity as you mentioned...

Yup. The standard Automatic works well for a wider range of driving conditions.

It's actually even more applicable to us here in SG, with our narrow ramps in multi-storey car parks and bad peak-hour traffic. You'd kill a dual-clutch quickly trying to inch forward going up the ramp in a MSCP, especially if you're forced to park on the 6th floor or something.

Plus, as you rightly said, many auto-makers are refining the standard Auto further, giving it wider lock-up range, giving it a feel of a dual-clutch without really having the minuses of the dual-clutch.

Personally, I'd take a conventional Auto over a dual-clutch almost everytime. With high-performance cars being the exception, of course. But even then, the Stinger GT also uses an excellent 8-speed automatic...

In terms of feel and responsiveness, I still prefer to row the gears myself... I mean you loo what you want to do whereas these automatic or automated gearboxes are simply guessing... ha ha... therein lies the issues...

understand that cnc has some promo deals for the stinger tomorrow. probably around 155k after discounts for the 2L.

Curious to know. Even if no promo, it's not possible to negotiate down to $155k from the current list price of $163k?

standard free items are

1. Car Cam

2. Car Mat

3. Solar Film

Nano coat used to be included some time ago, but they removed it (may still be able to ask for it).  Now they will just give you 50% off voucher.

Hearsay the quality not v good but if can get for free... might as well.  If cannot, do outside better.
