We all have to know a bit of IT for our jobs. And it's increasingly likely, that digital work will be necessary for many jobs in the future.

So the more you know, it can only be a strength.

That being said, the new jobs of 20-30 yrs later, no one will be able to predict what they are. They may not require strong IT skills.

Anyway just talking ...

Yes. Minimal use. Maybe 1/2 hr to 1 hr per day total.

Not during mealtimes.

I'm divided between the use of videos. I think my kids learn quite a bit from watching their kiddy videos (just like how we used to watch tv in the past).

Those learning games (except for those like coloring/drawing apps), i think not much point. Unless it's an electronic version of say sudoku.

I am not sure your child age but for mine he like to watch those toys review program by other kids..especially those train set. After the tube he would go about to set up the whole living room as close as to the tube program as possible. Edited by Kopites

The problem is that you have less time to learn as you get older.

Definitely not the lower primary school era of course, but upper primary or secondary school years definitely are quite formative in the way u harness and use technology.

It's definitely inevitable that you "see" less every year you get older. Neuroplasticity is a fact. That's why u learn skills much faster as a younger kid. You would require way more effort to pick up skills that a 10 year young you would do easily.

Then the question is that do you have the time and energy to invest.

IMO, if you don't dabble in such stuff when you were young. it's unlikely you actually have a deep understanding of how things work or how the ecosystems work. The only caveat is that increasingly, most people use IT as consumers.

I don't really subscribe to what mockngbrd says.

It's definite, that if you want to be highly skilled in ONE domain, u need a lot of time and to start young. Cos youth is time...

All the tech giants only hire 20-30s for the actual development. It's just a fact no matter how highly skilled u are, once u are 40s, most people don't hire these tech people. Just go read on what's happening in silicon valley. This is despite the fact that these were the brightest and best 15 years ago.

Haha sure. To each their own. What do I know anyway. I only teach digital design part time and am working in the digital industry for 15+ years.

Sure. everyone has different experiences. U teach, so your input is different as a teacher role.

Everyone who teaches tell me kids are different these days due to the digital influence. And i do agree. But that's the world they increasingly must dwell in.

My wife also did masters for computing, her first two jobs were in IT for 8 years.

You don't need to learn the actual programming language until you're much older.

But you do need to have a fairly good logical sequence in place many many years before that.

It's not something that u can just pick up when u are in Uni and suddenly over the course of a few years be competent. The people who are good at it, have been dabbling in it for many years. Their brains are literally hardwired to think in such a way.

In some way, the way our mathematics problems in primary schools are presented, actually do help that. (not so much the more advanced mathematics in sec school onwards).

Personally, I'm more of an intuitive thinker. I would have probably benefited from more exposure to logical progression when i was much younger.

Did consider a tablet holder for the rear seat when my dg was young cos she used to get really upset when in the child seat.

I've driven before in sg/australia for her crying for 1 hr + and it's really bloody distracting.

But quickly junked the idea when she was older, and when i actually bought the tablet LOL.

Oh, 4 yo still so small .. [laugh] Once they reach pre-teens or teenage they would start to try funny things like pretending to sleep, but playing at night. Sigh .. no tablet while dining is a good rule, but unfortunately not observed by many adults these days.

if u're in good company, naturally there will be minimal use of handphone

Some people are addicted to IG, must take photos and post instant stories ... sorry to say, usually women. [laugh] [laugh]

To be fair, there are also men who likes to be seen as very "busy", always need to check e-mail, reply to e-mails, WhatsApp, like they are the only ones doing big business. In reality, it's just bad social etiquette.

ok la. using hp on wedding dinner invites is acceptable  [:p]

I believe electronic devices such as mobile phones or tablets should be used as an educational instrument.

If the kid used it solely for entertainment, watching video, playing games, then it has not much value.

As a parent, we need to control that.

Not in my car. Only mp3 and radio. I like my boy to focus on what he is doing. So video while driving definitely contrary to what we teaches him. Edited by Kopites

Yes I know. That was why me and wifey start early with him. Make the tablet as part of his toy and not his main toy. Can do and can without.. a lot of self discipline. We reckon no way to shut him out from IT; macdonald, self check out (I hate it) mall directories...etc.

Fortunately for me and wife, my son can go without tablet for days or even weeks. Only when school teaches new song he would than start look for his tablet.

So the school is the bad influence la? :XD:

I wont say that.

My son progressed from telling the Chinese teacher " teacher can you speak in English. " now able to read simple chinese story book. All thanks to the teacher incorporating songs into her teaching.
