DAF also made the first CVT (now used on Lancer, Civic etc). But the belt had some problems, and had slippage, and cars had "unintended acceleration." They had some problems (can't remember, too long ago) and Volvo bot them, renamed them as the 3xx series, and later derived the 4xx series (IIRC).

 

The DAFs (3xx predecessors) and 3xx were very common in Holland back in '80-85 when I spent some time there.

Just did some reading up and you're right, DAF gave up their automotive arm to Volvo (joint venture with BMW first) and kept their trucks business.

I believe I saw a grey 1800 at a residence along Depot Road.

 

Is this a rounded design (prior to the 2xx brick style?)? It had a Karman designation too (design house?)

Yup! The P1800 coupe has round headlights sticking out from a tube shaped front fender (like a porsche).
