Dos and don'ts when driving automatic cars I REFER to Mr Goh Kian Beng's letter, 'Confused by driving instructors' (ST, Nov 26). When driving an auto-matic car, it is not necessary to shift the gear lever from 'D' (Drive) to 'N' (Neutral) when coming to a stop. Doing so will accelerate the wear on the transmission as a result of the constant gear engagement and disengagement. Automatic-transmission cars are designed to be kept in the 'D' position when stopping for short periods of time. In the event that traffic comes to a halt, especially during peak periods, drivers of automatic cars may wish to apply the neutral gear as it can be physically draining to apply the foot brake through-out long periods of standstill. However, it is important to note that the hand-brake has to be engaged as a safety precaution to prevent unnecessary movement when the car is stationary. We thank Mr Goh for his feedback. Sync Neutral Newbie December 2, 2003 Share December 2, 2003 The rented car I drove needs to be put at 'N' when stopping at traffic lights as I can't stand the vibrations it caused when at a complete stop position. Traffic jam...U need to move any min mah...so should stay to D mah...since it's also not very long....then traffic light timing can anticipate 1 especially on frequent travel road....so can put to N and rest lor...am I right ??? In order to protect and prolong the lifespan of your auto transmission its better to reduce the frequency of shifting the gears. For me I leave it at N for whatever traffic stops or jams. And of course , pull up the handbrakes. The N gear is there for a reason, so is the P.... jus my 2p worth.
