question, how do you shutdown the PC? I mean if you off it by the ignition off, wont it crash as it's not shut properly? Or do u have to manually shut it down?

I think they hibernate instead shutdown.

just read thru the thread, seems like a lot of people still have misconception/misunderstanding about a carputer.

 

its doable, and it doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg. i calculated, and it costs about SGD$600 for the CPU and touchscreen, excluding shipping, if i were to order from shenzhen factory.

 

1. display/input device - recommend 7" single DIN VGA touchscreen monitor with USB connector for the touch input. optional usb keyboard, which is only used during setup/troubleshooting. othertimes can make do with on-screen keyboard. if you have a nice front-end UI, chances are you won't need keyboard for day-to-day usage.

2. CPU - centrino based CPU that has built in GPS, uses 2.5" notebook type harddisk that is more hardy compared to desktop 3.5" variants. some models are fanless, which also means that they are low heat producing, like atom Z520 chip. the entire CPU casing is 1 big heatsink itself.

3. power supply parts - CPU has integrated ITPMS which taps to car battery. and is intelligent enough to know when your key is out of the ignition, so it can cut off all power to your CPU, or command CPU to shutdown/hibernate if its still on when the key is being pulled out. no worries of your carputer draining all the battery. it also smoothes out the spikes in the power delivered by alternator. when you first start the engine, the ITPMS can be preset to delay turning on the CPU at certain number of seconds. hibernating is the preferred mode as it is usually faster than cold boot, however, you need to install the drivers properly to avoid bluescreen or problems when resuming from hibernate state. even when booting from cold, it is also possible to achieve sub 20s boot times(some reported 10s boot times from cold). with the use of nlite for xp, and vlite for vista, the OS are slimmed down so that they run fast. slim linux is another option if you want speed, but personally i like slim windows better, coz easier to use and maintain.

3. to read RPM/speed etc, you need an OBD2 cable, with USB at one end. plug the usb into the CPU, and install any driver necessary(depends on what OBD2 u got). then u need software like elmscan to read live data off OBD2 port. in order to see fancyful graphics like 2F2F, you need a front end interface for your carputer. search in mp3car and you can find dozens of it.

4. some might ask, why need a carputer?

- digital recording in case of accidents, some pple rig the carputer to record upon start and cycle thru a few files, depending on size of number of recordings. why buy systems that cost thousands of dollars when you can build one just as good?

- GPS, using software like garmin mobile pc, and a usb GPS receiver, u can make a 7" GPS.

- music jukebox that's only limited by number of tracks you can store in HDD. if you are scared of interference, get a creative usb soundcard. if not, you can use any HU with aux-in to amp up the sound from the onboard sound chip.

- with huawei mobile modem, can surf internet while waiting for wife?

- can also play a few games like bejewelled while waiting?

- watch videos

- if u have a carputer with integrated dvd/cdrom , can rip music straight into the hdd without needing to borrow friend's cd for extended period of time.

- can display song information in any language, chinese/japanese etc. normal HU only display limited languages, the rest of the languages are shown as squares or underscores.

- live car readouts, diagnostic and clearing of engine check lights, to know immediately what is the problem.

- possibilities are endless, only need you to have the requirements.
