Hi Jonjees

a few questions,

1) did you fabricate any casing/bezel for your 7" LCD? how you do it, self-fabraicate or some local ICE shop?

2) Do you fix up the car pc, example connecting to ignition, car battery etc..., yourself or some local ICE shop to help

3) where did you get the different components of the car pc like touchscreen LCD, PC, DC-DC inverter, etc...

thanks

1) For the 7" LCD touchscreen you can just get it off the shelf.

The casing size might be bigger or smaller.

If its bigger, you will have to customize a frame for it or cut it down to fit. Usually this will happen on the sides only.

If its smaller, you can just mount it with some customized brackets.

So its actually quite important to get the right measurements prior to purchasing.

2) The setup for the car pc is all done by me and a friend that is well versed in simple electrical. The wiring is all hidden neatly and for power it taps on the wiring for the cigarette lighter.

For the audio, you will need a Headunit that can allow input from the PC speaker's board. If you are really into sound/audio, you should not use a smallform PC and go for the conventional PC that can house one of those top notched audio cards. It makes alot of difference. I have tried with my home PC that has a better audio card and the sound was so much better.

But if you choose to do away or do without your Headunit, then my advice is to go to an ICE shop and get them to make a connector for your speakers to your PC's audio card.

If you dont wish to go to an ICE shop and have everything dismantled and wires cut and stripped. You can get one of those devices that recieves radio frequency and transmits it to your headunit.

3) The PC is just a small form PC which i placed under my passenger's seat. I think you can buy this now in sim lim square. The touchscreen I got it from taiwan (no brand and cant remember the brand). The convertor can be simply purchased in sim lim square. Actually i believe all the parts can be brought from sim lim square.

I guess that just about answers all your queries.

Do let me know if I can help with any another further queries.

Sorry for replying to an old post. Not quite the same subject, but still, may be related...

I have an old laptop - very VERY slow CPU, casing cracked, etc. so quite worthless.

It is possible to "recycle" the LCD screen, put VGA card into CD changer, and turn this piece of junk into a "large screeen VCD system"? Anyone one knows any "Pimp My Ride" shops out there who could do it?

Thanks!

impossible.

laptop lcd signalling is vastly different from the standardised LCD monitors using either vga or dvi connectors. Each laptop lcd manufacturers uses their own propertarity std.

alternatively, u can write your own drivers software.. :)

If I can prove you want, will you buy me a LCD? I am serious.

It is possible to re-use any laptop screen for computer, no need driver or software.

well..i maintain its not possible.

lcd compose of 2 components - one the lcd panel itself and then the controller chip on the mobo which provides the signalling, not forgetting the inverter circuit so as to boost the voltage to power the cold cathode lamp to thousands of voltage.

From what I understand, each lcd maker uses their own standard. Here I am not talking about VGA analogue or DVI.

If you could do it, you can go ahead, go buy a dead mobo laptop from the hwdzoners or the vrzoners. To me its just not worth the effort, unless there are proper documentations online to provide for such task or that the lcd could connect directly to the DVI specs.

Places to 'hide' PC or bare motherboard (note this is not like the PC we have at home, see http://www.mini-itx.com/ for ideas of small casings):

* Glove compartment (yes, some people do it), see http://www.mini-itx.com/projects/ice-unit/

* Under seat

* Boot

The VIA CPU with solid state drive and withstand lots of shocks as there are no moving parts.

In Nissan murano the central arm rest can put in a laptop at anytime....can be locked too...
