Hoppe Clutched August 16, 2004 Share August 16, 2004 some taxis can run FASTER than you intend it to. Taxis are cheaper but very inconvenient. They are never around when you need them. Especially for families with kids, Taxi is not a good option. ↡ Advertisement
Luckcent 4th Gear August 17, 2004 Share August 17, 2004 Pay a bit more and book a cab and it is so much cheaper to maintain a car.
Koolaba 1st Gear August 17, 2004 Share August 17, 2004 I have driven a manual VW Passat overseas, equipped with on-board computer. The computer is able to show the instantaneous consumption. One of the techniques to reduce FC is to use engine braking as far as possible. To keep the engine running while deccelerating with engine brake, no fuel is consumed. The computer shows 0.0l/100km. The momentum of the car keeps the engine running. If u free wheel and use the brakes, fuel has to be fed to the engine to keep it running during this period. The computer showed an average reading of 3-5l/100km while free-wheeling. Lastly, maintain a light pressure on the accelerator. The difference in instantaneous consumption can be as great as 4l/100km although u r acheiving the same rpm.
Esky Neutral Newbie August 17, 2004 Share August 17, 2004 Hmm... that's interesting. This may be true for an EFI, but for a carby I'm not so sure... hope it's also the same! Aah... the FC meter, what I refer to as the "heart-pain meter" to my fren who has this feature on his Beemer 325. When the needle swings to the right, the heart is more "painful" due to more fuel burnt! Well, at least my heart is more painful! As for using engine-braking instead of free-wheeling to get better FC, well, it depends on the gradient of the slope lah, coz if u do engine-braking on a not-so-steep road, the car's gonna slow down too much, too fast. Capricorn Neutral Newbie August 17, 2004 Share August 17, 2004 (edited) after reading the article, been trying to maintain 2Krpm since. this morning, a car behind me pissed. My car moving slowly due to low rpm... But as article indicated, I maintained "patience" Patience.... patience... patience... PATIENCE!!! Esky Neutral Newbie August 18, 2004 Share August 18, 2004 Sometimes it's very difficult to maintain yr patience lah, like when you're coming to a traffic light or junction or queue, and u let off the throttle far in advance to reduce speed so that u can cruise to a stop (and hopefully the light has changed to green when u've got there). But that impatient bugger behind you doesn't have yr level of patience and tailgate u, bcoz he wants to storm to the end of the queue and then slam his brakes. Capricorn Neutral Newbie August 18, 2004 Share August 18, 2004 Haha..I am juz really patient recently, and those cars behind me juz dun believe that they have to filter out as I am only doing 80-90km/h on the 2nd lane... but that really help reduce my FC. Driving is all about being patience .... but sometimes really worried that some buggers might juz slam into your "BACKSIDE"!!!!
