Koolaba 1st Gear June 14, 2005 Share June 14, 2005 Hello, Our family has owned a 2002 S40. Our 3.5 years of Volvo ownership has been beseiged by problems, both with the car & SM. Car: 1. Handbrake cables which cannot release fully after 9 months of usage. Consequence: Screeching sound released when the rear wheel (discs) rub against the partially applied brake pads. SM could not identify the problem despite sending the back to them on 3 ocassions. The SA testified that he could not hear anything. Last resort, my father and I taped the sound (one was at the wheel, the other recording the sound), brought it to SM. The service manager, Mr Ang, attended to us then and managed to solve the problem. It took SM 6 months from the time the problem was identified till the time the problem was solved. 2. Melting a/c knobs, light switches. http://www.mycarforum.com/forum/gforum.cgi...=815885;#815885 IMO, Volvo uses cheap plastics and coats it with a layer of wax to exude the soft-touch feel. Problem occured after 20 months of usage. SM considers this to be normal wear and tear and refused to change the knobs. 3. Irregular fan speed When the switch is at 1.5, 2 or 2.5 the strength of the blower is supposed to be constant. However the fan speed can vary intermittently i.e. strong - moderate - weak. We do not have a climatic control system built in. Definitely this is not what expect. Problem came after 15 months of ownership. SM refused to change the fan module for us. SM: 1. Exorbitantly high service charges: be prepared to pay at least $220 for a simple oil change. Our latest 45000km cost us $420. 2. Free dents after every visit at SM Not too sure what went on inside the workshop. Most of the times, we receive these 'presents' after collecting the car from SM. (We have visited SM countless times, to let them resolve the issues with the car). SM repaired the dents with no questions asked. However in one incident, we received a few more dents on the other body panels which did not require repair. Care for customers at its 'best'! My advice: If you are willing to spend $150k on a car, there are definitely much better alternatives than the S60 T5. IMO, the cars which come close to T5 in terms of performance are Skoda Superb 1.8T and VW Passat 1.8T. With $150k, you can get either the Superb or the Passat and still have spare cash. Crv2004 Clutched June 15, 2005 Share June 15, 2005 For maintenance its free at the moment. car only 1 mth old. Service is at every 15000km. Not a single mod done. SM very particular on mods. Even changing headlight would void car warranty unless it is installed by SM. Fuel consumption is slightly on the high side, getting around 7-8km/L Wow the consumption is rather high for a 2L car. Koolaba 1st Gear June 16, 2005 Share June 16, 2005 Yes, speaking from personal experience. Sales service is absolutely good. The total opposite for after-sales service. If you recall my previous posting, I have mentioned about the irregular fan speeds when the fan speed selector is at a particular speed. I have highlighted this problem to SM when the problem surfaced before the 2 year warranty period was over. They always confirm that this is normal. On other occasions, they told me that the problem cannot be reproduced and hence nothing serious. SM is simply brushing aside the problem. They are not keen to replace the entire a/c switch module at all. After the warranty period is over, SM told us that there is something wrong with the electronics controlling the speed selector. They have to change the entire module and it will cost us $600 without installation. I find it ridiculous. It seems that they only have the ability to identify and diagnose problems only after the warranty period is over. I have an aunt who is driving the same S40 model (MY2001). Same problem but surfaced much later (after the warranty period is over). Bro, think twice before you really get a Volvo. Dun end up with regrets!
