My New Wheels

How did my tire-rotation trip ended up being psychologically conquered by TSW Reflex?

My criteria had always been simple. Not too light, big blades, and 5 spokes. Yes, 5, not 4, not 6. I dunno why but I'm just a sucker for 5 spokes. [sweatdrop]

They were busy, so I just hung around the shop, taking greedy peeks at new shiny rims. In that fleeting moment, I allowed my will to waver, and imagined this pair of shoes on my baby... Looking at it on the stand, it looked pretty weak. But in my imagination, suddenly the spinning rims on my baby was a sparkling beauty. [inlove]

The way it's dented inwards on each blade allows the reflections to come on with a sparkle when the wheel spins. The heavier weight at the edges gives the drive at high speed a stability. It's weighted suitably, not a heavy chunk of metal, but not a light, flimsy-looking BMX wheel. [nod]

At the end, after a long hard bargain, we have a happy man (me) and an impressed mechanic. He suggested we take a couple of photos for presentation to customers how these wheels would go beautifully with a G9.

It's indeed one of those rare occasions that I've ended up being immensely pleased with my impulse. [sunny]

Looks solid..... [thumbsup][thumbsup][thumbsup]

I'm a sucker for 5 spokes too [:p] .. I think many people are [nod]

For once, the description you give it, makes me think that I too made a wise decision when I got mine [:)]

How's the new tyres? Are they as quiet as the brochure says about it?

I'm thinking of changing to those after my ZE-326 are worn out (probably early next year).

Nice rims u got there! [thumbsup]

Like u, I am also a sucker for five spokes rims. [nod]

The TSW looks extra big due to the spokes terminating at the outside of the rims. First look I would think it is a 16"!

Good impulse buy! [:)]

Hi Presea,

From what I've know 326 are pretty nice rides. Nothing fanciful, but quiet and reliable. The downside however would be the tendency to have them end up with uneven tire-wear.

I've yet to really burn in the tires. So can't comment much now, but IMHO, 512s are by far quieter than ST115s. However, there's a degradation in dry road holding, and steering precision which is very obvious. Wet road holding seems just as good as ST115s.

I'd like to try other tire brands as much as possible too. Maybe something from Bridgestone would be nice. I dun think I'll really need some super high performance rubbers, just one with a relatively sporty grip and reliability in wet conditions will do. [thumbsup]

Exactly my sentiments too! [nod]

Easy maintenance is one important criteria! [sweatdrop]

You know I've always been complaining about the G9-bird, always so ready to lift-off from the ground once you hit about 110. This pair of rims have solved that. No more floatiness, a firmer and progressively heavier steering at high speeds.

Looking at it theoratically with some knowledge of simple physics, the weighting of the rims seems to play a part. I'd actually consider it very heavy... [sweatdrop] comparing against the 15s of 5zigen, Ray, or even Superlegs. And the distribution of the weight seems to be nearer the circumference of the rims. Maybe that's why at high speeds, the intertia required to change the direction of its spin seems greater, hence a more stable ride... [gossip]

Maybe there's some wheels guru around here that can pass some tips to us about rim selection, brands, models, design, etc. beyond the layman's approach of simply choosing wheels as fitting and cosmetic problem. [nod] Anyone to pass us his/her valuable advice or experience? [thumbsup]

[laugh]

More like subtract 10bhp to the car! [sweatdrop]

Weight though same as old rims, but acceleration seems far more sluggish... [shocked]

many users tot that changing same weight rims will not effect fuel consumption / acceleration, there are oso other points to consider too like rubber weight, coef of drag, inertia etc

Hi,

Just wondering were you anywhere near the vicinity of Liat Towers and Far East Shopping Centre today - Oct 23rd 2002 at around 1:15 pm.

Nope not me.....at that time, I was having lunch around Beach Road, and my car was at Bukit Timah...... unless someone stole my car....took it for a spin and returned it to the same parking lot.

My 326s are okay, especially in the cornering and stopping department .... and they don't have problems with tyre wear. That should be a sign of poor suspension setup.

As you probably know, I do drive rather hard, and I do corner VERY hard, so I am happy with the tyre wear being even all round. Except my front tyres wear out 3 times faster than my rear ones, which gets evened out when I do rotation.

I definitely am considering the 512s, since the 326 are no longer in production.

Looking for an odd size 215/40R16.....that would be perfect for me (and my driving style)

Shag, TB, anyone?

Could you gimme an idea how spacers would be detrimental to the car, especially if it's being cornered hard often? [confused]

I believe my wheels are fitted with spacers, as these rims have a +40 offset. I believe a G9 would usually be somewhere like a +35 to +38. [mad]

And the alignment is really swinging left and right. Toe adjusted. But G9 cannot adjust camber. The steering was a slight right, now has become a slight left when traveling straight. [sweatdrop]

Thanks! [thumbsup]
