Engine Mounting

Looks like cars usually need to change twice in 10 years for mounting?! Looks like mounting doesnt last long.

I believe mileage and usage (where you often drive to, how you drive) will affect the lifespan of the engine mounts. Does engine mount has a standard mileage to be changed, eg like timing belt? I think don't have right?

But during cold start in the morning when gear shift to drive, how come the vibration at the dashboard and steering increase as compared before the gear is engaged?

Sorry, that one I don't know... [:(]

Just want to update.

My vibration problem was indeed engine mounts. I just had the 2 old ones (see my previous post) changed and the car is really smooth as new now. Inspecting them after they were removed, they look ok, not broken or leaking yet, just old. But what a difference driving now feels! Enjoying driving again.

When was the first time you changed your engine mount? Or this is your first time changed your mounting? Thinking how long can engine mount last?

Why don't change all 3 or 4? Since going to replace might as well replace all because if the others also kaput in times to come, have to spend time and money again to go change.

You are right, should just change all at one go.

think engine mount is affected by a few factors: age, mileage and environment. if you always park under shade and mount is not subjected to high temp, it probably last longer. Most of the time, the issue is the hardening and craking of the rubber parts.

When was the first time you changed your engine mount? Or this is your first time changed your mounting? Thinking how long can engine mount last?

To everybody who asked why not change all the mounts, I summarize:

My car is a Honda Jazz GD1, 6.5 years old.

It has 3 engine mounts, A, B and C.

Mount A broke dramatically with a loud bang at year 5. Had it changed at year 5. Car was good.

Experienced increase vibrations and secondary effects the past few weeks.

Technician advised me its the other 2 older mounts that is the problem. Changed mounts B and C last night.

Mount A (1.5 years old) is left untouched.

Vibrations gone.

Not giving technical or professional advice but just sharing my experience here.

Symptoms of engine mount total failure:

A loud "piak" sound coming from the engine bay, usually immediately after a hard accelerate (stress). Thereafter, very loud unbearable metal grinding vibrations from engine bay at low speeds, stopping, moving off. But it seems fine when you picked up speed. A car usually has 3 or 4 of such engine mounts and not all of them will break dramatically at the same time. But should get it changed asap.

Symptoms of failing engine mount (not broke yet):

Strong vibrations at cranking, moving off, stopping, stopped, aircon kicking in, etc. These vibrations can be felt throughout the whole car, especially at the dash, steering wheel.

I think mounts typically are good for 5 years before they start wearing out to the point that you get noticeable vibrations. Hence it is good practice to change all mounts at around 5 years or when you notice your car start having vibrations which you cannot account for.

There are secondary effects as well like causing other loose things to vibrate as well. I had been trying to cure some vibration noises from within the car the past year which i suspect is due to something loose. An example is the wire that run from the dvr to socket. After changing the engine mounts and eliminating the root cause of vibrations, these secondary effects seem to disappear as well. Everything seems smoother and cleaner.

Most of the time when change engine mount is because the rubber inside the mount cracked due to prolonged use or if the driver has a habit of turning fast corners or going up humps at high speed I guess. It's one of the more expensive wear and tear parts that had to be changed.
