That's what I thought. Focus and Mondeos have been catching on rather quickly on roads here. I guess the prime reason why most car buyers find Ford cars more affordable is because Regent has a thinner margin compared to BM.

 

With regards to Astra, I guess its ok when new. Driven a 7/yo one before and its really sluggish. Even stalled on me once when I was travelling halfway, luckily I was not on the expressway.

the "myth" of resale value was debunked in a recent article in ST.

 

this is due to the open system where OMV and other car costs have become transparent.

 

it is more likely that you will get back your OMV and COE rebate plus one or two grand more for the more popular models.

 

the very weak 2nd hand car market vs the buoyant new car market is testimony of what was covered in the ST article.

it is possible to swop the grille for a honeycomb look. that will involve changing the bumper to a Cupra 4 bumper. think someone in our SEAT forum is doing that.

if you have the budget, why not consider the mondeo?

 

better engine, build quality than the focus in my opinion.

Yup I know about the resale value myth. Previously, resale value has a higher margin. Now it is closed to nothing because new cars are sold with very thin margins, except the German marques of course.

The Mondeo is quite a bit more compared to the Focus. Anyway, I am gonna check it out tomorrow, so will find out then.

i went to regent motors 2 weeks back.

 

the salesman was good. the mondeo in the current batch is 4 airbags, full leather, original 16" alloys, reverse sensor etc. slightly under S$110k i think.

The price for Mondeo seems pretty good. Just curious, did you find the car a little plasticky? I mean it looks very similar to Passat, but somehow Passat got a more solid look. What do you think? Or is it just me?

not as good as Audi, VW or maybe SEAT in certain areas.

 

but better than most cars, including some continentals. it is more timeless imho than the focus, which may go out of fashion fairly soon.

Do give the Mondeo a test drive too, it's a well built car IMHO. The previous generation Mondeo GHIA version is a fine car as well, with plenty of extra trim to pamper driver and passengers.

True that the resale value of any car can be as transparent as a mouse click away. The PARF value can be found at onemotoring.com.sg by just entering the car registration number.

 

Most dealers ask for 2-5k above scrap value depending on the popularity of the make/model and some even ask for up to 10k more for the rare and high performance ones!

Hey, I finally tested Tody today. Didn't want to leave the seat ... its a fine car and I can see its value for money too. The Tody 1.6M didn't have as smooth a gear shift compared to Oct 1.8T. Furthermore, the clutch biting point is quite high too. Is this the same with yours?

 

The Tody 1.8A is more responsive ... due to the 170Nm I guess. If I can't get my hands on Oct 1.8T, the Tody will undisputedly be my 2nd choice. Of course, not fogetting the Focus, its will be my 3rd choice.

Yep, .... 1.8T is really ..really good. I would love that engine too....

 

Yes, the clutch biting point is high, and it is quite 'stiff' at first, especially in 1st and 2nd. However, after a while, the shifting is much smoother.

 

Have you tried the Mondeo and the rest?

 

Take the chance and test drive them..... imagine yourself as a Auto Journalist ( for a day or two...he.hee )

the 1.8 feels fantastic after running-in. the gear shifts are so smooth that they are almost imperceptible.

 

do test drive the mondeo. i think the engine is equally wonderful. the only thing is that the doors don't sound as sturdy as the tody.

 

if you do get the tody, can try my SE Richard or Mel4Fun's. they are quite accomodative. make sure you get the original HU and disc changer...there are 2 sockets behind which allow the rear passengers to listen to radio/CD when the main cabin is playing the other!
