Air Con Spoilt

As expected from a 4 yr old car. Things start to get from bad to worse. Just out of nothing today, my climatronic aircon died on me. It was working fine until today. My dad did change the air con relay abt 2-3 months ago.

Now the display on the air con is totally blanked. Not even when i switch on my lights. Any idea whats the problem to it? Could it be a fuse problem or the whole unit is faulty.

Neutral Newbie

sounds like fuse problem unless something drastically happen to your climatronic control (not the aircon compressor or cooler)

why not visit autospritze and let them diagnose for you.

Where's this autospritze place? I'll probably bring it back to the place where my father changed the relay and get them to check it. If not i'll just bring it down to servo to fix it. Hopefully its just a fuse problem.

Just came back from Servo. As i expected it was a fuse blown. The mechanic said it wasn't just the case of fuse being blown. It could be somewhere in the air con circuitry which caused the short circuit.

Nevertheless, it could a surge in current that caused it. Any electrical engineers would wanna verify this? Me excluded. [:p][:p]

My aircon stopped working the other day while my wife was driving it. Read about the fuse problem above the battery, but that night was too tired to fix it.

Next day engine temp went up with my wife at the wheel. Lan-lan was at work and had to tell her to send it to the shop and get it fixed. It was the fuse box alright.

Smashed up the old one and figured out what went wrong [sly]

Next time I'll DIY my own fuse box [sly]

The relay changed might have contributed to the surge, if the part used is not the correct type. Just suspect.

Or it could be just a fuse that is due for replacement. Maybe, wait and see, if fuse blow again, then somewhere in the air-con circuitry causing it.

I suspect its the relay causing the problem. On that day after i came back from Servo, the fuse blew again. Brought it back for them to check again. This time around, we test it for more than 2hrs. But the problem seemed ok again.

Anyway i got a couple of spare fuse from them just in case. Hell it was raining so heavily and i had no air con. [furious][furious]

Hi beanoyip,

Not sure where your air-con relay located. Suspect it is behind instrument panel.

Shd check the part nos and compare with the original.

To my knowledge, Skoda Fabia air con relay which is a simple device is located behind the instrument panel. To replace it, need to remove panel for access, that will cost $$$. I think the device is not expensive, workmanship is expensive.

In your case, if the workshop, after replacing the relay and causing fuse to blow, shd replace it with another serviceable device or cure the snag. Don't know whether b4 you replaced the relay, was there fuse problem, or air-con intermittent problem.

Air-con intermittent and erratic air-con or sometimes did not come on is the start of suspected relay problem. Another sign is sometimes it does not allow the gas to be charge into the system. My experience.

If the relay is new and ok then there is a possiblity that the compressor clutch is drawing too much amp. Check the supply to the clutch and also the grounding. Poor grounding or wear out magentic cltuch plates can draw heavy wattage.

Possible also. But first the power supply to the clutch must pass through the relay.

There was once I changed the brake s/w becos its not activating the brake light. After changing a new unit on functional check, it did not work even it's the same part nos. From skoda agent some one. So no choice, get another new one. The second test, it's works.

Conclusion, even new items, can also sometimes be defective on functional test. But if its jap parts 99% sure works.

Replacement OEM parts are mass produced and therefore are not subjected to high percent of QC. It will be worse for after market parts.

I am surpries at the way the mech's approach towards troubleshooting the fuse blown problem. Not very professional, just a part changer. The mech should try to check for voltage drop and use a clamp-on meter to detect high amp draw when the air-cond compressor kicks in.Beter still us a circuit fault tracer to check for intermittent short circuit and grounding.

Most if not all mechanic would just chgd the suspected component and hope it cure the defect for now. That's it.

In their database(minds), this or that components problem(fail) that led to the defects, chgd it and troubleshooting done.

Even authorised agent do that. But one different or advantage agent has is they possess the correct manual with all the necesssary wiring diagrams and troubleshooting guides given by the manufacturer. If they are unable to solve, they have a source to refer to, that is the parent manufacturer.

Even though Workshop mech outside uses circuit tracer and the tools reqd, without the known correct value of individual current or wiring they are still at a lost when complication kick in.

This is one of the reasons why many including myself, got back to agent to solve certain problem developed by the car even though we are charged high prices [smash] for it.

Simple maintenance like fluid changes and topping air-con gas or mechanical wear and tear on brakes/wheels, routine servicing is fine to be done outside but no all defects.

It could lead to more problems in the future when it was not done correctly in the first place.
