Tyre Weight ?

You guys has always been talking abt Rim weights etc.

but why seldom see ppl discussing abt the tyre weight ??? i'm sure tyre weight shld also be a great concern when it comes to the overall unsprung weight rite ?

 

BTW approx how heavy is a normal tyre ? asking becos was surprise to find out that my 14" rim with 185/65/R14 yokohama A300 total weighted ~15kg !!! i guess my 14" rim must be damn heavy !!!

 

and my spare tyre 155/80/R13 with steel rim weighted ~ 14kg !!!

Hi! there, Walau,

 

Short of making your own tyres, we just buy what's available with budget & performance in mind. There're more tyre choices for cycling.

Hi! there, Walau,

 

When you shop for a tyre, the price that you pay & how well the tyre will perform, i.e. is it good in the wet road or dry roads, or both, will determine which you'd choose.

 

It's no good if a tyre bought, becomes an added hindrance to the performance to your car. You've posted to look for lightweight tyres, at the tyre shops, lift a tyre and you'd find that it is heavy, put it onto a rim, it may give you a backache when changing a puncture.

 

Many tyre companies are making tyres with less rolling resistance, with more mix in synthetic materials for a better & longer life in its usage.

 

Take for instances, 195/60 R14, if change to a 205/50 R15, it will give you a +1 in wheel size. This will increase the rolling resistance, fuel consumption, cornering stability and price of a new set of wheels, plus tyres.

 

The only advantage you'd immediately feel is, the car corners better. Later, you'd realize the effect it'll have on you mileage due to the wider tyre.

of course i'm not looking for wat light weight tyre (if any). and i doubt i'm willing to part my hard earn $ on it. but juz curious that why it isn't an concern when changing tyre ??? i'm sure diff model of tyre are of diff weight etc. but seems like nobody really care ? ppl go for light rim but who noes he/she might end up with a heavy tyre and ended up the overall combination is still heavy.

 

eg.

5kg rim + 5kg tyre = 10kg per wheel

7kg rim + 3kg tyre = 10kg per wheel

 

so with a light rim (5kg) but heavy tyre (5kg) then whats the point ? so shldn't us be concerned with tyre weight as well ? anyway juz my thought.

 

BTW i'm still hoping someone can tell me the approx weight of a 185/65/R14 tyre (if you happen to weight one) :p

Hi! there, Walau,

 

I can see that you have a very inquistive mind, which is very good.

 

I had a supplement on tyre & wheels, but couldn't find it. From what I can recall, the tyres are designed also to reduce flexing during cornering.

 

So a lower profile tyre, which greatly reduce it, will also give a harsher ride as the sidewall of the tyre is much stiffer than one with a higher profile. Of course, higher profile tyres have their advantages, as it will give a better ride, as in India, they still use 90 profile tyres, which I find is very good when you have to run over a hump, which they call, speed-brake, which in some parts are about a foot high. But it's really bouncy if you corner at high speed.

 

At the current speeds that modern cars can go, it wouldn't be feasible to go back to the days when there were skinny tyres before the 1930s.

 

So, the material use cannot be compromised, as recent news reports of badly designed tyres or manufacture caused road deaths. As the invention of the present tyre is not attributed to any mechanical/auto engineer, it's by Dr. Dunlop, forgotten his first name, a vet from Scotland. Maybe our Doc Mike may find something in his medical sciences to give us something new, a hovering car whenever an asteroid pass our earth from the blind side. He'd gladly do it to keep from changing tyres every time something hits his undercarriage.

y excessively concerned with weight of tyres? it's not purely just plys of rubber and rubber additives. a larger part of it goes to the steel reinforcement meshes. nope.. you should be more concern about choosing the right set of tyres tat can take the load of the car. if you can meet tat minimum requirement, the lower the value, the lower the content of reinforcement, the lower the price and the weight.

wat i tried lifting n using before is yokohama aspec db is lighter than bridgestone gr80 ,

db = better fc , gr80 = slightly 20 to 25 km lesser per tank of petrol .

db = lesser grip , gr80 = much in dry n wet
