actually cant say that i'm really into SPL .. cos

1) i dun play loud (but i'm sure even SQ speaker can play loud too)

2) when i audition the CDT next to the helix $580 model, the open soundstage of helix attracted me .. but pity the upper range / vocals didn't seem to sound forward or brilliant enough

so i guess i'm more of a mix-mix type lor. i'm sure the a/d/s speakers also can play loud right.

now i'm kinda stuck. if i spend $1200 or so, using CDT CL speakers, i might find it not open enough.

if i spend more for mid-range CDT HD / ES or something similar, it'll end up being like $1500-1600 and then i'm really gonna feel the pinch. i'm like thinking - sure, the sound is wonderful, but how often am i stuck in the car listening to music? and my car's plasticky interior rattles with each road imperfection, it's like watching a cinema show with someone eating popcorn next to you - might as well watch TV at home without the popcorn rattling.

so i thought about what's the alternative - just get some reasonable maybe CDT CL speakers and use it with my crappy HU, end of story. that's $300. sure, the crappy HU can't power speakers well but, it can't be that bad right?

will think about it further - and give audioedge a try. time to figure out where it is and whether it opens today (sunday) ...

Yes they are open on everyday except Tuesday.

Go and try out the a/d/s and give a field report for us [;)] .

I'll looking forward to it.

I am pretty much in your situation too. Looking for a setup at around the budget. Only thing is that I am not so much of a SPL person. All I want is a system that can allow me to enjoy my jazz in the car.

Cheers [:)]

So how do u think a/d/s compare to CDT and others? [hur]

Another speaker many people use is AVI. Please take a look at JM audio @kaki bukit if u free.

Than after all these shopping u can select ur own prefer speakers [flowerface]

one of the greatest drawbacks in choice is, u can't quite compare the similar class of speakers back to back. e.g. audioedge has a/d/s at $280, but can't show u CDT etc next to it. but it seems (to me) to beat PHD MF $480 odd which was displayed next to it. seems a little lacking on the bass side, and the stats say it goes down to as low as about 70 odd Hz. as compared to 60 Hz of CDT.

CDT, which i heard in Sin Tin something in Toa Payoh, seemed lacking in the brilliance (not overbright please, but some adequate brillance) in the trebles. such that when displayed next to their rainbow SLC 265, the rainbows seem to take the cake.

after all this listening i'm none the wiser ...

and then comes the problem of whether to have an amp now or later. would be great if the amp was 2nd hand. so far the 2nd hand one i've come across is a soundstream reference 405 which on paper pumps out 45x4 + 100x1 rms, not sure if it's a bridgeable model but if bridged should get something like 75x2 + 100x1. but these numbers, though "underrated", dun seem to compare well numerically with modern amps that go for like 75x4 and above. another area of confusion, i guess.

Something to add.

One need not spend lot's of $$$ to enjoy quality sound. If the noise intrusion into the cabin is noticeable not matter how many thousands you invest in speakers you'll be not better off.

Choose a setup that is reliable and somewhat universal cause you can migrate it to your next car. Quality is subjective cause we all listen to varying types of music and varying levels of loudness...

It not necessarily how loud it can play but how clear it can sound so that you do not have to pump up the volume... balance and proper tweaking of frequencies.

Ques you need yourself to answer:

1. What kind of music do I listen to? Pop, rock Jazz or simply BBC?

2. How much noise intrusion do I get... from tires, traffic?

3. Space available for installation of speakers and amps?

4. Quality of HU (most new HUs are pretty good)

I'm rather intrigued as to how the speakers are auditioned... Every Brand and probably model of speakers are only as good as the type of amp its used to drive it. Brand A amp may make Helix sound perfect but crappy for CDT so its not that straight forward... Its imperative to get the best amp-speaker match for each set up and listen and weigh the total system cost.

Thanks Rayck for the analysis!

1. What kind of music do I listen to? Pop, rock Jazz or simply BBC?

that's the problem, it could be anything. something with lots of bass, or just old standards jazz, or vocal songs. that's part of the difficulty, the one size fits all kind.

2. How much noise intrusion do I get... from tires, traffic?

mine's a daihatsu yrv, it's not well-silenced so compared to most of your cars, it'll have more noise. akin to the level of makes like hyundai accent (possibly even noisier due to rattling from the harddish suspension). probably have to turn up the volume some to enjoy the music, or leave it quiet as "background" music.

3. Space available for installation of speakers and amps?

pretty tight. if i put in a sub+box in the boot, i'll have to make the passenger seats sit up straighter to make space. right now passengers can really lean back. some suggested spare-tyre compartment for sub. would be interesting but may have to put the spare tyre somewhere back in the car if i go on malaysia trips. underseat may accomodate small amps.

4. Quality of HU (most new HUs are pretty good)

what i have now is pretty crappy (but i'm surprised audioedge has it on display for their audition of speakers - maybe as a Negative Demonstration?) but i'm prepared to sit with this HU first, since changing HU now or later is not a big issue in terms of wiring/installation etc.

not sure if i've mentioned this thing about openness of soundstage.

some of you brothers have a great setup (and probably very expensive too) with the open soundstage effect. i heard we cannot judge openness on auditioning speakers. you need to buy, install, position the speakers, then see if you can get that effect. well i hope to achieve this but if i don't, just too bad. i heard the PHD FB Pro 6.2 and during the audition it sounded nicely open, but as an expert bro mentioned, u put it in your car and it may be just totally different.

going this evening to check out the old school (class A?) soundstream reference 405. negative points for this include the tendency to heat up, it's long length, and it's limited wattage (i was encouraged to aim for closer to 100W per channel). but before i give it a miss, must go check out this warm-sounding amp first.

and see if got time go over to autobacs to compare speakers further.

1. All round music try CDT, DLS or Dynaudio

3. I believe YRV spare tyre is space saver kind, so for trips to MY you might want to consider putting in full size spare. Full size spare pbly cannot fit in the wheel well anyway [:p] can consider fabricating boot board and fix amp/woofer in spare tyre well. If you don't fold down your rear seats too often fixing it to the back of the seat is ok.

4. Depends on what is your HU. Some HUs (blaupunkt for eg.) connectors a little different for the RCA, so if your installer a bit careless or boh chap you end up re-wiring twice if you change HU later. Plan a bit upfront first.

If u r to more rounder type, there are 2 brands which i had used and IMHO, will suggest u give it a miss, tat's DLS n Dynaudio. [rifle]

Haven heard of the CDT so cannot comment anything, so either CDT or a/d/s should fit ur bill [nod]

Try not to listen to those that are above ur budget, like FB pro, it will make u even more confuse lor [confused]

A good amp will does wonders to your speakers [thumbsup] Cheers!
