What next ?

Hi, after washing the car and when the car is dry i can still see lots of water marks and swirl marks. Seemed to have lost the shine and glitter. My car is a year old and have a coat of HiGlaze88 on it since Apr 2004. I can see parts of the paint work that are inside of the car is still pretty shinny. How do i get the shine back ?

 

Is swirl mark remover the answer ? The 3M swirl mark remover is for some reasons %$$#@ difficult to find. How's the Megiuar equivalent ?

You may need machine polishing to get rid of those swirl marks, one thing is for sure it's going to be very difficult by hands. Btw what do you use to wash the car? Presence of lots of swirl marks is a sign of bad washing techniques, time to improve your techniques. What do you use to wash the car btw? sponge?

the maid was helping to wash the car most of the time and with some of those 2 in 1 car shampoo. I now know better and have now switch to Amourall light blue wash.

 

These days i try as much as possible to wash it myself.

First thing to do is ban the maid from washing the car, imho it's better to leave the car dirty rather than inflict more and more swirls on it

 

Next, you might spend a bit of money machine polish the car, some of the guys may recommend you some good reliable shops.

 

As for sponge, get one where the pores are big and random, I got a sponge from carrefour suntec (I don't recommend those sponge where the surface is flat and the pores are very tight - when you are washing the car, the dirt might be left on the surface and you are rubbing it on the paint)

Bro, please check properly first before making such remarks. Alot of car owners :

 

1. don't know themselves the right way to wash a car (case in point, our friend here has been using 2-in-1 shampoo)

 

2. don't teach their maids the RIGHT way to wash a car, if the owners themselves can't do it right, how can they expect the maid to?

 

It's really unkind to make such remarks about the maids, as if they love washing cars in the first place! Please reconsider your remarks, thanks.

I don't see anything wrong in not having the maid washing the car,it wasn't meant to have any unkind connotation . Like it or not, there's always a market for 2in1 shampoo,it may not be for you or me, but for someone with little time, it may be just what they need.

Read some good feedback on 3M swirl mark remover but it has been dam difficult to find a bottle man.

 

No lah..., i do not detect any negative connotation from Steelblue's reply. I think Steelblue basically meant as far as possible do ask them to wash the car, something along this line.

I guess ur Higlaze is long gone. To restore ur car shine and reduce swirls. Get the Meguiars ColourX. Its a good chemical cleaner that removes oxidation, reduces the water marks, deep cleans ur paint and gives a coat of polymer protection. To further reduce swirls, add a coat of Meguiars NXT Wax. This product actually has diminishing abrasives that eliminate swirls with continued usage. Previously I thought NXT used fillers like the 3M swirl remover but I was wrong.

 

Anyway the products I suggested are easily found in Stamford, Concorde, AutoAcc and Autobacs. There are other good products like Klasse and Mothers Reflections to restore ur paint but they are hard to find.

They are not similar product. Anyway this is what i've found out using HiGlaze and Meguiar ColourX.

 

after HG i find the spots of blemishes/oxidation ( i think ) and swirls reduced but still a little of an eye sore. I decided that more work is needed for the neglected coat of paint. Next day tired ColourX.

 

ColourX further reduces the spots of blemishes and swirls, shines little more than HG and gives a deeper wet look, relative to HG.

 

I noticed rubbing in plays a part for ColourX, in that the harder you rubbed the more the spots abd swirls goes away. But not too much rubbing, cos I also noticed, beyond a certain point any further rubbing yields no benefit. I btw, used the normal type of cotton cloth u find in many petrol station. I just find it hard to part with my $$ for some micro-fiber detailing cloth

 

Do watch out, there is a Meguiar ScratchX and there is a Meguiar ColourX. Both removes fine swirls and blemishes but i think ( not 100% sure )ColourX gives a polymer coat.

 

My plan is to do another round of ColourX to see any further improvemnet. If it does am thinking of using HiGlaze as a final sealant. If it does not, will consider Meguiar NXT was or soft99 carnuba wax.

Well after u are satisfied with the condition of ur paint u can use higlaze again. Until then, keep using the colourx to repair ur paintwork.

Actually i suggested colorx as it was a solution to repair his paintwork. Higlaze is an acrylic sealant that does not really improve the paint condition. Anyway ur right in ur observations, colorx does help reduce swirls and watermarks. The good thing is that its a chemical cleaner so there are no abrasives in colorx so u will not damage ur paintwork even if u think u messed up.

 

Scratchx has abrasives so i would be very careful bout that. most pple u try scratchx dont get the desired results because of the rather tedious application process. u can only do small portions at one time and alot of rubbing is required which would knock the air out of most users. Also scratchx offers no protection whatsoever.

 

I suggest u use NXT after u happy with colorx. it will further remove the swirls and scratches over time.
