Dtvox Neutral Newbie February 10, 2005 Share February 10, 2005 Happy CNY to all... Got the chance to meet up with relatives and in the process learned some new things. The one in particular is that there is such a thing as a Brake Dust Shield. (Pardon my lack of knowledge of such things) One of my uncle got a new Mercedes and apparently it is installed as a standard option. The benefit, no unsightly 'dirty' rims unlike my ride. Three days is all it takes turn my rims black. Quicker if it rained. Any one had any experience with installing an aftermarket one (if there is any)? If yes, what are the cost involved and does it really works? Reckon it may be a worthwhile investment especially for conti drivers who faced brake dust problems. ↡ Advertisement
Kelpie 2nd Gear February 10, 2005 Share February 10, 2005 IMHO, the rim design does play a part. Get a rim with as few spokes and as few hard to reach edges as possible. This should alleviates the brake dust problem. Regards,
Saabest 2nd Gear February 11, 2005 Share February 11, 2005 I had them installed on all 4 wheels of my car & it really works. Cost me about S$50 each before installation costs! No regrets

Saabest 2nd Gear February 11, 2005 Share February 11, 2005 In reply to your questions, I bought my brake dust cover overseas. They are very light because it is made of aluminium. You can check this web site for pictures: www. brakedustcover.com that I believe you can order for many types of cars. I took it to a Shell Autoserve garage to install for me; offer them $4 per wheel easy job because it just needs to take out the trye & fit the brake dust cover over it. Once installed, you cannot see your brake pads anymore and it looks fairly neat to me. During this recent dry spell, my rims are kept clean for almost 3 weeks! Hope I have clarified your queries. Koren Clutched February 11, 2005 Share February 11, 2005 is it gonna cover the whole disk brake? it'd be uglier than having brake dust on the rims then..
Saabest 2nd Gear February 11, 2005 Share February 11, 2005 Yes, it should cover the whole disk brake otherwise it will not work. It will be neat and better than the unsightly brake dust, IMO.

This should alleviates the brake dust problem. Regards, I once saw a VW Beetle on a set of rims without any spokes. Meaning, there's no holes on the rims, just a complete solid piece of rims. Guess this will eliminate the brake dust problem.
Eugh Neutral Newbie February 11, 2005 Share February 11, 2005 Wheels are normally not a solid piece for a reason - which is to assist the brake cooling. If the rim is one piece, then the brakes may not be adequately cooled any may fail...
Octopus 3rd Gear February 11, 2005 Share February 11, 2005 (edited) I thought rims are not solid piece so that it will be lighter? The lighter the rims the better for pick-up and FC? Wouldn't a solid piece enable better cooling as the heat can be dissipate faster through conduction? Heat conduct better through solid than through air, right? In addition, since it has more surface area (solid piece) the cooling will also be better? Edited February 11, 2005 by Octopus

If the rim is one piece, then the brakes may not be adequately cooled any may fail... In that case, save the money and wash my rims since cooling is more important in our hot and climate weather condition. I guess brake dust shield is a good to have and I enjoy my weekly car wash. Dtvox Neutral Newbie February 11, 2005 Author Share February 11, 2005 Thanks for the info. The site you indicated has quite a range.
Saabest 2nd Gear February 12, 2005 Share February 12, 2005 The shield comes with slanted holes for cooling, so this should not be a concern. Beware that some shield are customised for certain rim designs.
Kelpie 2nd Gear February 13, 2005 Share February 13, 2005 I think with the shield, you are just hiding the problem i.e. instead of the dust trapping on your rims, you deposit them behind the rims. Nothing beat washing afterall lah. Just my 2 cents worth. Regards, ↡ Advertisement
