Was on 204SAT for like 70K kms (went through 2 rounds of flush using this ATF) until just recently.

I personally don't find this any better than say Castrol mineral ATF or even Mobil ATF. Both still give me the heavy klunks during gear changes when the ATF is not fullt warmed up.... until I tried T-IV upon the advise of those who used it. Now the klunks are reduced by more than 50% and shifts are so much more positive..... to make things better, the T-IV is cheap. So flushing using 16 litres doesn't blow a hole in my wallet.

Trust me..... Dexron 4 is the way to go......

16L is required for flushing? [sweatdrop][sweatdrop]

I'm using the OEM SP3 as per owner's manual, DIY drain and fill every 20K, cost $20+ for 4L from stockist.

Drain & fill requires only 4 quarts for me. But my autobox capacity is 10 litres..... can use maybe 12 to 13 litres (15 quarts) to do the flush. That was how much 204SAT I used the last time.

This time using T-IV which comes in 4 litre tins..... 3 tins barely sufficient..... then the 4th tins might as well use all.... since the tin does not have a re-sealable cap. [rolleyes] Also not so painful since it cost $25/tin of 4 litres, rather than like $12/quart for 204SAT. [:p]

In the Optra, there's a pair of hoses from the AT which routes underneath the base of the radiator where, in certain situation, the coolant temperature can reach as high as 99 degrees. Not sure why the design is like that but personally, feels that it's a bit risky to use mineral.

Oh... you mean the last few rows of the radiator serves as the ATF cooler??? Mine is like that. Didn't know Optra has this feature too, where the radiator has dual channels.... one for water and another for the ATF.

Oh OK. If that's the case then I'll try T-IV or just stick with my old trusted RP Max ATF. Never let me down yet. But cost wise T-IV is still cheaper than RP but RP is synthetic.

See how cos I still got a couple of qts of RP ATF so still need to buy 2 more for a drain & fill & also to replace my PS fluid.

But T-IV is Dexron 4 whereas RP is Dexron 3. [confused] Decisions, decisions, decisions. [confused]

So far, all the autos I know wil use the radiator to cool the atf. U can install an additional ATF oil cooler or 1 comes standard with the car but still the radiator wil b used to cool the ATF in auto cars.

Oh, I didn't know that...... I thought only some models had this additional cooling for the ATF. [rolleyes]

Anyway, if you're the sorta that likes to drag the car..... then its advaiable to get a standalone ATF cooler. Costs less than $150 and maybe another $30 for installation.

Not sure if the bottom of the radiator acts as an ATF cooler or warmer but on the Optra, seems the ATF turns dark rather fast, so not taking any chances. Maybe that could be the reason why the slight difference felt with partial ATF change.

Yah. I think it's Hayden or something like that.

There is a guy in the forums who can do it for u.

Last time I never need cos my Corona already had an additional ATF cooler. Now my Optra I not sure if have or not?

Anyway I intend to use synthetic ATF so I solve a little of my "hot" problem. But RP is getting too damm ex for me & I am seriously considering using Toyota Type T-IV. [dizzy]

Anyway I hear my Aisin autobax gets along very well with T-IV ATF so I'm still considering how.

Two popular brands are Hayden and the Permacool. I'm using the tube & fin design from permacool. The better one I understand is the bar & plate design from Hayden. Price wise, maybe only 20 to 30 bucks more ex for bar & plate.

Using synthetic ATF doesn't mean it is better (as I experienced from a functional standpoint). Perhaps the oil might withstand heat better and not breakdown so easily..... but I've not encountered any such occurance, be it with mineral or synthetic ATF. But do bear in mind that using synthetic does not equate to better heat dissapation, so your autobox will still suffer if you stress it out w/o adequate cooling.

[rolleyes]
