Passerby Neutral Newbie June 2, 2005 Share June 2, 2005 recently discovered...Malaysia launched Golf GTi. Priced at RM225,000 (or S$102,000), it comes with 18"rims, sunroof, DSG and many extras. Heard that the import duty of cars is 250% in Malaysia (much higher tariff than Singapore's). So guys, you can imagine how much profit is C&C trying to make. ↡ Advertisement
Blackyv Turbocharged June 2, 2005 Share June 2, 2005 since when car price up there is lower than car price here?...
Passerby Neutral Newbie June 2, 2005 Author Share June 2, 2005 You're right, foreign cars prices there are generally higher than here, like BMWs, Merc, and even Honda Jazz. It is quite a rude surprise that VWs are cheaper there, especially Golf GTi.
Falc 3rd Gear June 2, 2005 Share June 2, 2005 SG got COE mah. Someone wrote in Forum about abolishing COE, I will be 2nd in line to support that. Any manual GTi there btw?
Passerby Neutral Newbie June 2, 2005 Author Share June 2, 2005 Yeah man, COE approx. S$20k. But Malaysia's duty is 250% vs Singapore's 150% (?) is still alot more than recent COE cost add up leh...
C708 Neutral Newbie June 2, 2005 Share June 2, 2005 P, Its not fair to equate it like that. If you take a conversion from MR to SGD, obviously it cheaper by the sheer strength of the SGD. If you are to compare prices, it has to egg to egg. What you earn in Malaysia, you spend in Malaysia. hence you gotta take it as one to one meaning you'll have to take in consideration that purchasing the Golf Gti in Malaysia as one is to one in comparison to wht you would pay for in Singapore. $ 225k in Singapore can buy a lot more car here !! The Golf Gti is only about $ 130k here. What you earn can buy you the Golf Gti much cheaper in Malaysia in relative SGD terms, but can you drive it here in Singapore ?? Blackyv Turbocharged June 2, 2005 Share June 2, 2005 agree MY earn $5K ringgit driving a car cost $200K+ ringgit??--> fat hope SG earn $5K SGD driving a car cost $130K sgd?? -------> possible
W210k 1st Gear June 2, 2005 Share June 2, 2005 (edited) It is a well known fact here in SG that the Exklusive Auto group of companies make a very high profit margin for the Renaults, VW and Skoda they sell. Their margins are close to the dealerships for prestige brands like Merc and BMW. Ask any auto dealer who knows his stuff and they will tell you that. Go to the LTA website for the breakdown in car prices and compare and you will realize that VWs are sold here in SG at higher profit margins than your average Toyota or Nissan. p.s. By margin, I am talking about the selling price of the car MINUS its basic cost (OMV, tax and COE, registration etc.). It all just translates to a higher depreciation for the brand ... in that the owner will immediately see a step change in the market value for his used car (even if only 1 day old) the moment he drives off the showroom. This is because the profit made is immediately pocketed by the dealer upon delivery of the car. What is left in the residual value (minus the dealer's high profit margin) is the true market value of the VW you own thereafter. Bad bad depreciation IMHO. Tploh Clutched June 3, 2005 Share June 3, 2005 You're right, foreign cars prices there are generally higher than here, like BMWs, Merc, and even Honda Jazz. It is quite a rude surprise that VWs are cheaper there, especially Golf GTi. Honda Jazz is classified as MPV in MY, which is subject to higher import duty. MY import duty structure for cars is not one % for all. It varies. In my vague memory, larger cc cars call for higher duty ( i.e. tax more on the rich and support the poor more ). Importation of complete unit ( i.e. not knocked down and re-assembled in MY ) call for higher duty ( i.e. usually luxury cars come in as such. E.g. like a Ferrari. Again, the rich will be taxed more ) If the car has more than a certain % of local content, then the tax will be less ( E.g. the mainstream Proton, and thus make it more affordable to the poor, in a relative perspective ). Unlike SG which is a flat rate for all, except in road tax. In comparison, the quality of life, in terms of car, for the poor in SG is less than MY. Falc 3rd Gear June 3, 2005 Share June 3, 2005 And not to mention that only certain undisclosed people in MY have the license to import cars! Draconian ...
Falc 3rd Gear June 3, 2005 Share June 3, 2005 Yeah man, COE approx. S$20k. But Malaysia's dutyis 250% vs Singapore's 150% (?) is still alot more than recent COE cost add up leh... SG's tax on car is abt 135% of OMV, this tax amt is added on the original OMV, thus making the car cost before COE = 235% of OMV. When u say MY's duty is 250%, do u mean that this 250% is to be further added unto the original cost, thus making the final cost 350% of original, or perhaps 250% is the final cost? Civic155 Neutral Newbie June 3, 2005 Share June 3, 2005 MY earn $5K ringgit driving a car cost $200K+ ringgit??--> fat hope SG earn $5K SGD driving a car cost $130K sgd?? -------> possible But for RM200K Golf GTI, you can own it forever. But in SG, you need to renew COe... to mention higher cost...
Falc 3rd Gear June 3, 2005 Share June 3, 2005 That's a good point. Just to balance that abit ... SG let u get back your PARF when u scrap at the end of 10 yr, MY don't.
C708 Neutral Newbie June 3, 2005 Share June 3, 2005 (edited) W NOt any more VGS removed the right to import VWs for Cars & Cars since february I believe ......they are just a distributor for VWs now just like what Daimler Chrysler did to the other C & C ....Cycle & carriage Edited June 3, 2005 by C708
Passerby Neutral Newbie June 3, 2005 Author Share June 3, 2005 agree with you. buying a car in SG is like leasing it from LTA. how sad.
Passerby Neutral Newbie June 3, 2005 Author Share June 3, 2005 scrap value is now 55% of omv, and maybe lesser than $15k if one do so, what a waste for a future classic icon car. But if extend another 10 years, the down side is COE for extension, and hefty road tax. Either ways, LTA wins big time.
Passerby Neutral Newbie June 3, 2005 Author Share June 3, 2005 sad news for enthusiasts of Golf GTi, we can only watch the car with admiration and drool over it. No thanks to the Exklusive(ly) high flying agent.
Passerby Neutral Newbie June 3, 2005 Author Share June 3, 2005 You know and analyze well. good call. In MY, VWs are imported, not CKD. However, my point is, c&c is asking for a sky to put the GTi on the road in SG. They provide showdy service too. ↡ Advertisement
