I'm not exactly sure how long maintainence free batteries can last, but they do not last as long as the conventional batteries where you need to top up battery water.

My conventional battery is already 37 mth old, still working strong.

Can anyone also explain how the inside of a maintenance battery is different from a conventional battery, such that it does not need battery water top up.

Ah_Veo,

If I remember correctly, my SE told me the stock batt that came with our Aveo can last 18 months. Maybe some1 here can provide more info?

Hi, it depends on how u use it! With ICE, I think it will have shorter lifespan. Normally around 2yrs /40 K. My 30K servicing at 18 mths old already recommended to change but I tell SA that I will change it at 24 mths, they said no problems but remember to top up the battery water.

durability depends on how one uses the car and the battery.

an easy way to check is to monitor the time required to start your car in the morning. as the battery gets weaker, the cracking takes longer. seldom battery will just die out of sudden so you should have enough "warning"/signs & time to replace.

also check the exterior walls of the battery. you will notice swelling (outwards) if a battery is old...

best method is to visit a workshop and ask them check your battery for you with a volt meter nod.gif

You can never tell from the voltage but if you got one of those that check for charging that the mechanics use, it is better. Then again you can check the hydrometer. More water or lower specific gravity means battery going to die soon. This only applies to the wet maintenance types.
