Chewbacca 1st Gear June 10, 2010 Share June 10, 2010 The IT show starts today, and I'm thinking of getting one. I'm a gamer, but I think I'd like a bit of mobility and utility. Buying a laptop may end up saving me more money as I won't have to buy a media center when and if I do get a HD TV for watching movie on. I was originally dead set on getting an Asus, but then I can across this: http://www.bootstrike.com/itfairsg/pcshow2...ochure-leaflet/ The 5820TG-432G50Mn. An I5, with a decent graphics card, according to http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphi...List.844.0.html , 4GB RAM and only $1400. Seems like a steal. The closest Asus has to offer is this: http://www.bootstrike.com/itfairsg/pcshow2...ochure-leaflet/ Slightly better processor, but a much weaker graphics card. And 14". I'm a man, I don't mind my things being bigger and heavier (*hint hint*) The Acer also seem to have better free gifts... But I'm worried about the reliability, because I've heard people complaining about Acer overheating or motherboard dying..... ↡ Advertisement
Parkingidiot 1st Gear June 10, 2010 Share June 10, 2010 For bang for buck, the Acer is really good. I was also contemplating this model 5820TG-432G50Mn the last few days, comparing many other brands. I think to ease your mind, just get the extended warranty (up to 3 years) from say, HN or other stores, and then not really need to worry too much. But price and feature wise, this model is a pretty good choice.
Pufferfish1 Clutched June 10, 2010 Share June 10, 2010 had 3 of the acer, very stable fast but your cd drive would spoil quite easily , need to buy external drive. overall good but need to buy cooling pad
Beanoyip Turbocharged June 10, 2010 Share June 10, 2010 Forget abt Acer, so many other brands out there worthy of buying
1fast1 Supersonic June 10, 2010 Share June 10, 2010 Acer = Ass-er. DO NOT WANT. 2 desktops bought at SITEX 2009, both having multiple problems since then. One of them I had to change out the mobo at my own trouble and cost. Ass-er "service" told me they will not fix it and out of "goodwill" they will not charge me for troubling them to come down and troubleshoot it a little out of warranty either. Ladykillerz 4th Gear June 10, 2010 Share June 10, 2010 i used to be an Acer fan. after using this brand for ages, i decided to give it a miss. i shall not go further. anyway, for laptops and with my personal experience, you might want to consider MacBook Pro, HP series, Dell series or Lenovo series. just some suggestions. ;-)
Chewbacca 1st Gear June 10, 2010 Author Share June 10, 2010 Haha. I'm militant-anti-Appler. Lenovo should be quite solid. But, so far, didn't see anything close to the specs and price of the Acer I posted leh......HP....eh. Okay lar.
Flying_genie 6th Gear June 10, 2010 Share June 10, 2010 Just back from PC Show. Typing this with my new Acer Timeline laptop. Seems to be behaving itself. My 3rd Acer product. The only advice I can give is to take the extended warranty when purchasing Acer. Like what someone else said, Acer is good value for the $. Reliability is 'by your own luck'. At PC Show, can also squeeze retailer for quite a lot of freebies as all the retailers initially offer only what the manufacturer gives for free. Try to get something additional from the retailer themselves.
Eugn86 3rd Gear June 10, 2010 Share June 10, 2010 I'm using an Acer desktop. It's the worst computer in terms of reliability that i have. I have owned Fujitsu and HP laptops, and am currently using Asus. I think Asus is really very good. The hardware is really very good. And there was once just after my warranty ended, i sent my unit in for repair of the LCD and keyboard. They charged me just the admin fee of $50, and replaced the LCD and keyboard for me free! I was so surprised, because that really made my day. Can you imagine Fujitsu charged me $168 for the power adapter which spoilt just after 1 year, and i ku-ku still buy from them? Anyway, I would recommend Asus. Asus is from Taiwan too, and over there, Asus is more premium than Acer and regarded more highly by the Taiwanese. Vooth 2nd Gear June 10, 2010 Share June 10, 2010 Let me add my two cents...Bought an acer aspire 4740G last IT show, encountered hanging problems. Replaced motherboard and recently started hanging again. Prior to that was using budget Asus lappy, now passed to sons and still troublefree... Fcw75 Hypersonic June 10, 2010 Share June 10, 2010 (edited) Please DO not buy Acer laptop, piece of crap. Bought a Acer laptop 1st May and have been encountering hanging problems all the while. Very frustrating when you need a reliable laptop. SKIP!!! There are so many other brands around. I have used Toshiba, HP and Fujitsu laptops before. Never have this problem. Chewbacca 1st Gear June 11, 2010 Author Share June 11, 2010 seriously, how much are the freebies worth when buying at PC Show ? Free thumb drive or nice plastic bag ? Eh. Free 500 Gb portable HD leh. IPushUFly Clutched June 11, 2010 Share June 11, 2010 Never buy acer laptop as it is a problematic computer. You may consider Hp for higher specs and for basic Compaq. Dell is for mid range and lasting. It won't spoil easily.
