VW may kill off their award winning 'Twincharger' engine

Volkswagen may pull the plug on their award winning 'Twincharger' engine. The innovative supercharged and turbocharged 1.4liter engine that makes as much horsepower as a normally aspirated 2.0liter engine (but a whole lot more torque) has won 'Engine of the Year' twice (2009-2010) but this little feat has not stopped VW evaluating whether they should stop producing it due to expensive production costs.

The sources inside VW said that while innovative and technically sound, the TSI forced induction engine isn't cheap to manufacture. Of course it isn't. You have to be quite blind if you don't see the complexity in the dual type forced induction engine. It has to have the engine, a turbocharger and a supercharger. Most cars have an engine and one or the other item. Having three major power making components is certainly more costly than having two components. Imagine if you make a million cars without a supercharger. The end result is that you save millions by not ordering a supercharger.

The same source also says that VW now have the technology to ensure that a single turbocharged direct injection engine may have enough punch and tractability as a Twincharged one. Of course VW will make such a statement come true. But the reality is, it all boils down to cutting costs. Cutting costs is a large fact of life these days and it is especially true with large conglomerates like VW. Let's just wait and see what happens next.

In the meantime, those of you that are thinking of getting a VW 1.4TSI Golf, Scirocco, Polo, you should go get one as you may never see such engineering innovation in a car again IF VW do decide to kill the Twincharger.

Read about some time ago. I think such 'tech' will only be reserved for higher value cars in the future.

I don't understand why VW's general omv is so low if these engines are so expensive to produce.

again, its more about getting more returns....if a large company can save 1 dollar for a million items it means a million dollars in savings. Losing the supercharger saves them millions which in turn can be paid out as bonuses to the shareholders and the clever engineers etc. etc. who supposedly thought about the savings in the first place.

  • Godzilla Minus One: Surprisingly emotional and poignant

When one thinks of Godzilla movies, one imagines an oversized amphibious dinosaur generating a terrifying heat ray from its mouth and fighting with other oversized monsters. Meh, nothing special, right? Wrong. Here’s why Godzilla Minus One should be an action movie you should definitely catch. In this version, the timeless clash between monster and man is once again set against the tumultuous backdrop of post-war Japan. But, unlike typical action films that dive headfirst into destruction a

5 ways the Polestar 2 Core Edition proves less can be more

With a less-is-more approach, the Polestar 2 Core Edition offers a more value-for-money entry into the Swedish brand.  What first comes to mind when you think of Sweden? IKEA, and probably ABBA. But there's plenty more that has come out of Sweden besides flat-pack furniture, meatballs and impossibly-catchy pop songs. Founded as a standalone brand just eight years ago and headquartered in Torslanda, Sweden, Polestar is a design-forward electric performance brand that wants to put its Sc

The enduring charm of Singapore wet markets

I know I’m idealising it all - as a not-so-young millennial that can’t remember the last time he cooked a full meal for himself. (That was probably a good two years ago.) But moving on slightly from morning walks now, the space I’ve found myself frequenting when I feel like I need a break from the routines of everyday life (or to simply clear my head) isn’t the park. It’s the basement level of Punggol Plaza. That a wet market even exists here should be surprising. Punggol, after all, is qui
