Sei_fei_loh 1st Gear August 30, 2005 Share August 30, 2005 Hi all.. went to JB today and understand its cheap to change the extractor. the guy says it better to use a 4-1 extractor. but it seems most of u are using 4-2-1. which is better? by changing the extractor, is there a significant increase in noise? he said after changing the extractor, still can pass inspection. hw true? thanks ↡ Advertisement

Fuzzylogic 2nd Gear August 30, 2005 Share August 30, 2005 From what I've read 4-2-1 extractors will give betta low end torque and 4-1 gives more high end power. Think most cars wud come stock with a 4-1 exhaust manifold. The stock ones are usually optimised for economy as well while after market ones are usually tuned for more power. The length and bore of the extractor has to match the power characteristics of your car else you might end up losing power in the end. After mkt mufflers usually provide better flow for the exhaust gases. On the downside, they are usually noisier due to the better flow. LTA approved mufflers cost many times more than non-approved ones.
Sei_fei_loh 1st Gear August 30, 2005 Author Share August 30, 2005 i was if i change my extractor, there will be a metal rattling kind of sound during high rev. hw true?
Fuzzylogic 2nd Gear August 31, 2005 Share August 31, 2005 It's more of a slight hissing noise rather than a rattling sound. If there's a rattling sound, the installation was most probably not done correctly. The hissing noise is due to the fact that the after market extractor has thinner side walls for the piping than the stock exhaust manifold. The high velocity at which the exhaust gases travel hit the walls on exit from the combustion chamber causing the noise. I'm not too sure if those 'branded' after mkt extractors made of stainless steel has the same issue but they usually manufacture for high performance NA or Turbo cars only. Jamesgetz 4th Gear September 1, 2005 Share September 1, 2005 if u usually drive in the low-mid end range and wants improvement in this region, go for 4-2-1 extractors with high-flow cat. 4-1 is definitely for high end gains. high-flow cat will still remove the toxic stuff from the exhaust gases and more importantly, preserve some back pressure for good low-mid end
