Polishing by hand - or invest in orbiter

Hello,

I have been following this Detailing section for a while. Its amazing to view the works of art by some of the forummers here. But most of the time, they are accomplished with the help of an orbiter.

The problme with my paint work is that there are dried water spots in certain places, so the paint looked hazy at certain angles. On closer look, they are faint white in color. I tried using Scratch-X but to no avail.

I am doing research on Menzerna products, and I have a bottle of HGAS for touch-up. Thought of investing in the whole range of Menzerna from DiyGurus. But then, is it really necessary to use an orbiter to achieve best results? Can I remove the water or oxidised spots with the use of only "Chew Lart" or arm-strength? Scared I use orbiter scratch the paint.

Cheers.

pretty hard to harm your paint big time with an orbital unless you do some kinda stunt with it. :)

jus stick to the right pads with proper polishes and u will be fine. so go ahead and get the orbital. wat the arm can do, the orbital can do better, faster and more.

the menzerna line is a good system to follow. their polishes are top-notch. although FMJ is a great sealant, but i believe there are equally as good sealants on the market that are more convenient to use.

I think we need someone to organise a session to show us the right

way, the right products, the right pads to DIY with machine. [sweatdrop]

I did once visit Bro Gen2 during one of his detailing session.

Tell you, it's not simple to DIY with machine. Gen2 was using at least

2 differ kind of machine, various pads and tons of products.

I just imagine how much I need to invest for all those. [shakehead]

The best still go by hand to maintance the shine, if need to do any

correction of paint work then I better send to a professional to do.

Even u obtain your machine, how many times u think u use it [hur]

If u planning to go for Business of Detailing then is another issue.

Just my 2 cents.

i do know of a friend who uses his bare hands for wax application! [nod]

He'll take some wax and rub onto his palm then apply...

Reason given... the heat on the palm can help the wax to cure/bond onto the paint better....

Dunno true or not... but one thing for sure.. he's car..... [jawdrop][jawdrop][jawdrop]

It appears that using the palm will help the wax spread easier cause of the heat generated by your hand. There is even a crazy guy in the States using his bare bum to do the sides of his car!

Whether using hand or machine, if done properly with the proper detailing accessories will result in very good finish. However, there are some situations which demand the application of machine aided polishing.

That is why you will see most professionals using machine. It will help cut down the time taken to detail a car.

In Singapore, machines are not widely used by us because of a lack of power supply, unlike overseas. If power supply is not a problem then do consider a machine if possible, in the long run, it will pay for itself.

The speed from polishing orbiters is fast and consistent. It helps to "burnish" swirls and heat up the polish/wax for the deep polish look.

But if use wrongly, not only by DIYers but so call professionals or terrible PDIs for new cars, you get even more beautiful holograms all over.

Will help if you practise on an old car or training panel first. Really don't want to see our bros here made mistakes on their new rides. Just my 2cts.

if u have a power pt, go for machine...it works faster, better, n will have better result...

a DA is pretty gd for removing swirls n light scratches....i used to work by hand but dun seem to get the shine out of my black car. After using my DA, the shine of my black car realli pop out....

ppl who never use machine b4 will say stay away from machine. ppl who tried machine polishing will not go back to hand polishing...

juz my 1 cent...

For those who intend to get a machine, do read around on tips on how best to utilize it. As there are many different types of pads as well as polish and cleaner on the market, getting the right tools for the job is extremely important to maximize the potential of the machine.

Say you have water marks or swirl marks all over the place, a proper pad with Menzerna Intensive Polish followed by Final Polish will remove the marks and yield a smooth surface for you to apply a cleaner and LSP.

If your paintwork is relative new, then Klasse AIO as an initial cleaner followed by sealant topped with wax will provide a shine that is hard to beat.
