Cordia_gsr Neutral Newbie May 12, 2006 Share May 12, 2006 Sounds like pinging to me. If I diagnosed correctly, you will only hear this "ball bearing rattling" noise when you are accelerating from low RPM. Once on the higher RPM, this noise will disappear. Have your advance timing checked. It should be way too advance. BTW, what car are you driving? Carb or EFI?
Kb27 Supersonic May 12, 2006 Share May 12, 2006 Have you changed manual transmission oil? It might help.

Kb27 Supersonic May 12, 2006 Share May 12, 2006 MTF (manual transmission fluid) should change after about 60k or so. This oil lubricates the gearbox. I just thought it is a cheaper way to find out if it will solve the problem. Besides, it should be changed anyway.
Cordia_gsr Neutral Newbie May 12, 2006 Share May 12, 2006 Yes, your timing is way too advance. Retard the timing degree and you should be doing fine. That's the reason why you find more pinging as you down the octane from 95 to 92. Alternatively, you may want to try 98. You will hear no if not less pinging. Pinging is very unhealthy. Prolong it will cause engine damages.
