Any performance tyres can exceed 110km/hr in the wet.

I have use T1R & SP9000 for 30K each.

 

I give T1R thumbs up as it is not noisey, still ample of feedback and good steering

response as compared to SP9000.

 

I have tried T1-R, GU:WN Trampio, ST115, G3, Preceda, GR80, Direza 101 & XM1 (comfort)

sorry for hijacking the thread- need some advice on where i can get TOYO tyres around Choa Chu Kang area? (tyres are punctured and i dun want to drive all the way down to Yap Bro, UBI, to replace it. thanks.

T1R is a tyre that does a little of everyting but nothing great. Neither here nor there. Seriously, for it's price it's way over rated.

 

Top end street rubbers that I've used b4 from each stable (no semis):

 

Pirelli. The best that $$ can buy for street use; P Zero Nero. Then again they cost just too much. Suberb wet, dry grip. Ultimate control. Quiet for such high end tyre. Damn Ex

 

Mich. Pilot Sport. Very gd tyre but I still prefer P Zeros in terms of control. Damn Ex

 

Yoko. AD07. Great dry grip, hopeless in the wet, gd price. Used even the JDM spec specially order, wet grip was even worst.

 

GY. F1 GS-D3, great wet tyre, vague in dry. Much improved over GS-D2

F1 GS-D2, gd dry grip with, damn noisy.

RevSpec, not imprerssed at all.

 

BS. SO-2, great tyre but pity obsolete. RE070 & RE050 both very good but also expensive.

 

Dunlop. SP SPort Maxx. Gd tyre but Ex

 

Falk. GRB Tune II. Prob the best street tyres ever made with great price. I remember ripping them in 1 hr in Pasir Gudang back in 90s. ST115 was definitely a step backwards.

 

Toyo; didn't like the GU:WN. I kinda like the VIMODE, then again the T1R felt like the VIMODE but lot more expensive.

 

I'm sure I missed listing a few gd rubbers

 

Then if I can get ~80% of perf for ~half the price. I'll go for the latter. Currently that would be Hankook R-S2 till someone comes up with something else.

You missed the point that for sporty daily rides, we're exactly looking at good dry with decent wet performance, what you term as "neither here nor there"!

 

We will not be looking for AD07 type of execellent dry, bad wet. Nor excellent wet but mediocre dry.

 

That's why Dunlop Sports Maxx and probably T1R are good choices.

 

Anyway, I don't find them expensive at 215/45R17 profile. Not much difference bet the prices of the tyres listed thus far.

heh heh heh ...Since for daily drive the Toyo ViMode suffices and perfroms as well as T1R. 17" only cost RM370. So the T1R is over priced here, 17" S$200++.

 

Good daily drive tyres that are much cheaper and does the job, Federal SS595. Some trackies using it as well.

I'm currently on 245/40/R18 T1R tires for my Evo. Previously was on AD07 which lasted only 20K km until it was worn to the steel belt. Also used PS2 before.

 

A lot of people tend to focus on all out grip of the tire and fail to appreciate the overal characteristics of the tire.

 

The T1R doesn't have the tenacious dry grip of the AD07 but is as good as, if not better than the PS2 in the dry. The wet grip is also comparable to the PS2 and way ahead of the AD07. For the AD07, I am only confident to go up to 130km/h on roads with standing water whereas on the T1R I am cruising and zipping through traffic during the heavy downpour at 160km/h. (I only speed when it is raining heavily cause no camera and TP) I don't know how resistant is the T1R to heat and fading on the track as I have yet to try it on Sepang.

 

Grip aside, the T1R is a comfortable and quiet tire similar to the PS2. This can be attributed to the soft side wall. This somewhat compromises response but it is by no means mediocre. Still very good; just not semi-slick good. Playing with tire pressure will help here. Breakaway at the limits is progressive for the T1R due to the rounder shoulder. This makes for a very forgiving tire unlike the AD07 which gives up with little warning.

 

Special thing about the T1R is that it generates amazing levels of squeal when subjected to lateral loads. Perhaps this is why drifters like it! It's not at the limit of grip yet when it starts screaming but all the noise makes good showboating at Orchard Rd and warning for amateurs at the track. It's easy to get the tail out even on a 4WD car. Makes me want to floor the throttle at every corner just for fun. Once off the throttle and you start unwinding the counter-steer, the tire catches back gently.

 

I like to compare this tire to the Michelin PS2 because it is only slightly cheaper than the very expensive PS2 and also the PS2 seems to be the gold standard of street tires. It is as good as the PS2 but don't know if it will last as long. Highly recommended for amateur trackies and people who like to muck about in the corners. Hardcore people who know what they are doing should stick with the cheaper AD07 or even semi-slicks.

 

I value ease of use and comfort with decent levels of performance, so I will stick with the T1R for now.

Just went there yest morning, and found out tat the 215/45/R17 T1R costs $250 while the top range R1R costs $360/pc for 17".... btw if u happen to puncture the tyre or hit the kerb wif it, there's warranty for it, u just need to pay half the price to get a totally new tyre.

 

i am paying SGD195/before GST for T1R 17 inch. i know becos i just punctured my tyres (didnt get it from PTS hence "no half price")

Yes, T1-R gives lots of feedback to the driver.

I did not encounter T1-R aqua-planning when I was on NS highway at 140km/hr.

As you say, "It's easy to get the tail out even on a 4WD car", so either the tyre grip is not that great or your Evo is 500+ bHp.

 

"T1R due to the rounder shoulder", that's a typical street tyre design and not of UHPT.

 

T1R is "suppose" to be UHPT from Toyo yet it fairs poorly vs the competition UHPT. It should be positioned as comfort street tyre and not priced as UHPT. It does a little of everything but nothing well.

 

Just look at the pathetic score. It performs basically like Toyo ViMode but @ premium price.

Federal SS595 can hit 190km/h along NSHW in rain. Nice comfy tyre as well. You save a bundle as well compared to T1R. SS595 does everthing that T1R does but $$ left in the bank.

It is a street tire! The higher performance range will be the R1-R.

 

I like this balanced tire. I'm tired of hard and noisy tires.

 

The lateral grip of the T1R isn't as good as A046 or AD07 but I can live with it. My evo is 500+bhp.

 

What's the difference between speeding at 190km/h in Malaysia and 160km/h in Singapore? Same. Probably worse in malaysia considering the highway is mostly double lane only. Pot calling kettle black. Same same. We both have blatant disregard for the law. Don't try to sound high and mighty.

 

My friend tried Federal on his Evo at Sepang. He liked the tire very much until all 4 of his tires cracked along the joints in the middle of the thread. Dumped them and switched to Toyo. Now he is on the R1-R, not T1-R, and his feedback is that it is just as good as the Federal but quieter.

He's of one track mind. Balanced performance tyres like Sports Maxx and T1R make no sense to him. To enjoy daily rides, I've to "downgrade" to normal tyres that's not in the league of such tyres. Otherwise, go for his obsession - the cheap dry tracked proven Hankook RS-2.

 

Oh well... We prefer balanced dry, wet and noise in our performance daily rides.

Yup. Just to reiterate what I have posted above.

 

If you are a hard core trackie, Evo driving chiongster who travels at 190km/h or more in the wet, want value for money for tonnes of grip, ignoring all other characteristics and civilites of a good tire, get the Federal 595 range or Hankook RS-2, as recommended by Abba.

 

If you drive any other car, soft core trackie, travels below 160km/h in the wet, prefers a tire that is balanced between performance and comfort, consider the Toyo Proxes T1-R among other good tires out there. Pilot Sport 2, Preceda 2, F1-GSD3, Advan Sport, SportsMaxx, P-Zero range, RE01R, etc just to name a few.

 

For those that are confused,

Toyo Trampio R1-R is a Threadwear 140 tire.

Toyo Proxes T1-R is a Threadwear 280 tire.

Toyo says its new T1R has "high-modulus bead apex rubber." You probably don't know what that means, and neither do we. This wasn't much more clear: "Spiral-wound, jointless edge and capplies." If this test were based on no comprendo engineer-speak, Toyo would win.

In fact, the Proxes never placed higher than eighth in any test, and in two dry tests, the autocross and the skidpad, the Toyo finished last, trailing the top finishers by significant margins. In some tests it felt better than it actually was performing, but overall, Geswein noted it was "soft and imprecise" and didn't "feel like a sport tire."

 

In the end, the Toyo has its high wear grade (280) and attractive price ($135) to thank for its eighth-place finish. In performance terms, there are lots of tires that do better. Perhaps a new set of "capplies" would help.

Hi Tanzy!

 

Guess what? I swapped my worn out Dunlop Sports Maxx with the T1R (225/45R17). After listening to many satisfied users from DC5/CL7, as well as favourable reports from 1010tire, I decided to give it a shot.

 

My impressions:

 

1. Quiet tyre for a high performance tyre.

2. Sidewall seems softer than Sports Maxx.

3. Handling seems a little less than Sports Maxx, but not noticeably so. But tyres are new so I'll hold judgement on this.

4. Comfort much better than Sports Maxx.

5. Wet traction is good.

 

Verdict: Worth it for enthusiastic street driving and a spot of tracking. Spouse was very happy with the new quietness and comfort. I'm OK with it's handling.
