I recently went to see a 2nd hand WRX for sale, and throughout the test drive, there was a CEL on all the time... the agent said that once you mod the car, with the slightest change in anything (and this one had a blow-off valve installed), the CEL will always be there and can never be remedied. Is this true? mr. BMW302 is that what happened to your old WRX as well? or is the agent just pulling our leg?

Well, all I can say is the SE is full of crap. ke ke ke [laugh]

We installed countless BOVs on WRXs, fitlers, down pipes, exhausts, but no such things happened. For Subaru, the CEL will go off after reset once the fault is rectified.

You can get the car to be diagnosed by workshops with OBD scanner (think is $30). The scanner can tell you what is triggering the CEL [;)]

Highly likely the car was mod and it the process of de-modding (selling car mah), the previous owner would not have bothered to rectify the CEL issues.

Also highly likely the de-modding process would have caused the car to function less than its optimum.

I believe that the car should be alright, just that you need to bring it to one of the aftermarket tuners to do a scan to see what's "off" and to get the required/necessary parts, followed by a re-tune.

If reverting to stock (i.e. the ECU was not touched), then bring the car to a Pro Subaru workshop and they will advise you what is missing (Cats, EGT sensors, etc...) which might not be there if the previous owner did extensive mods and subsequently de-mod w/o putting back everything.
