Noisy knocking when starting up cold engine

If it is a whistle sound during cold start then it means that your belts need to be changed or the belt tension is too loose

 

If it is a rattling or tick tick sound, it is the pulley disc bearing goen case liao.

 

Take to a workshop, take out the pulley disc and shake it, if got sound means the bearing faulty

Use mineral oil (thicker oil) - 10-50W for your engine.

rule of thumbs, any mileage above 100K should change to mineral oil

Using a thicker oil eg w50 grade will deaden the sound but doesn't mean it has solved the problem

If you suspect the knocking sound is caused by wear and tear of moving components, you should try certech ceramic gel to rebuild the components back to pre-wear and tear shape and tolerances

thanks 4 all the replies... Think the sound comes from a belt next to the alternator. Will bring it a ws for checking.. Btw my car is a latio.. Any idea how much will the damage $$ be? Thanks
