Jamesc Hypersonic April 4, 2017 Share April 4, 2017 Yap am seriously considering haha Am trying to get a depreciation less than 10K/year Either a. extend COE b. Currently one of the VW agent trying to sell me a Management car which is a jetta sportline that is about 9 mths old for 103K, very tempting.. but a little wary of the reliability c. Just learn to drive more patiently and buy the altis Based on what you said. Extending seems to be your best option. ↡ Advertisement
zerobim08 4th Gear April 4, 2017 Share April 4, 2017 Different transmission type power loss (efficiency). DCT is the best while CVT is worst. Taken from (quite a lot of info): https://www.nap.edu/read/21744/chapter/
merc280v6 6th Gear April 4, 2017 Share April 4, 2017 No wonder lah! All those who praise CVT here (like snake oil), must be owning low-torque cars ... < 300Nm (by my standards). Otherwise the graphs really speak for themselves ... CVT cannot perform in performance cars (pardon the pun)!

Unfair 3rd Gear April 4, 2017 Share April 4, 2017 CVT was designed to save fuel by always being in the correct gearing. If you insist on putting a CVT designed for 150NM of torque in a car with 300NM, it doesnt make sense. Just like putting a 8/9 speed ZF trans in an Altis. But doesn't mean a CVT cannot be designed for sport applications, the one in the new WRX is not having a problem handling higher torque.

merc280v6 6th Gear April 4, 2017 Share April 4, 2017 of cos la...hi perf cars wif high torque will need a diff tx system le....common sense lo.... CVT is for BnB cars or everyday use cars....simple but efficient r the keys.... but then Civic T uses CVT also...now lets find out more on tt ya....turbo engine..the pickup is really something if u tried it urself....damn fast....roaring Sorry lah, the Cibic T is NOT a performance car. Period.
zerobim08 4th Gear April 4, 2017 Share April 4, 2017 Well, CVT is cheapest to make of all and yet provides some advantages. Win win for bnb car. If you want to squeeze more performance given similar power/torque but at the same time maintaining efficiency, then DCT is the best, I think. Of course DCT is the most expensive of the lot. Unfair 3rd Gear April 4, 2017 Share April 4, 2017 Sorry lah, the Cibic T is NOT a performance car. Period. ð No 300 Nm no torque (again, pardon the pun). ð Exactly my point! So enuf of the snake oil lah Exactly! CVT is just not cut out to do it! ðð¼ Only the BnB car owners are the ones singing praises here LOL You do know that CVT was banned from F1 because it was so efficient and allowed the engine to be kept running at peak performance at all times....

Yup!CVTs are indeed (relatively) cheaper to manufacture, vs DCT or even visco-coupled automatics which are more complex in design ... but that would only allow manufacturers to increase their gross margins! There is nothing to shout about entry level BnB cars fitted with CVT. To make CVT sound greater than what it is - is akin to selling snake oil. So please mellow down! Arctalion Clutched April 4, 2017 Share April 4, 2017 When I was searching for a car earlier this year, I did a lot of research online before committing. Most of us have limited budget and if the one you can afford comes with CVT only just have to accept the fact. All trans got pros and cons. Most important is that you are OK with its characteristics when you test drive and maintain it properly after. Otherwise all trans also will go kaput.

Otherwise the graphs really speak for themselves ... CVT cannot perform in performance cars (pardon the pun)! ððð Hello, No one here claims that CVT is powerful. Which eye of yours see that? We are only saying CVT is fuel efficient, no lag in the irritating gear change of DCT. Anyway, if u r truly a motorhead who wants performance, you shld be driving a real manual gearbox. Why u looking at auto gear? Anyone here who is driving any kind of auto gearbox should not be claiming that he knows what is power and performance. U want power performance? Go drive a manual gearbox! CVT is for smooth and fuel efficient ride. That's all it does.
Jusnel 6th Gear April 4, 2017 Share April 4, 2017 Just to share some thought Driving a old FD1 (9 yr plus) and went to a few showrooms to test drive Tried both Honda and Toyota on CVT on a non-peak period where you can have a stretch of road to floor the accelerator for a short while. I was thinking that after 10 yrs from my old car, technology should be improved such that I should feel a better performance from these vehicles but sadly, I left both showrooms contemplating whether I should just extend my COE as neither the city/civic(1.6)/altis gave me a better drive than my old car. I'm sure the 1.5T is a different animal but the price is 130K! And I don't really like the new Civic's super low headroom at the rear, with a center hump for passengers. Also tried the K3 SX model (with 6AT) and in fact, that gave me a slightly better drive but then the engine sound even louder than my 9 yr old car when i stepped hard on the gas...... So far, have not decided whether I should simply extend my COE as to do so, I would need at least 4-5K to do up my old ride nicely (including re-upholstering all my seats), as well as forgo my PARF of 11K at the end of current COE.. Honda bro, Times have changed. The new Honda cars no longer the same as your Civic. The new VTEC engines are muted on power and to increase fuel efficiency. This is so to meet the euro standards. Don't blame the CVT. Nothing to do with CVT. Blame the new engine technology. So don't expect to feel the same from the new Civic. It has been tamed.....
