Icekitten Clutched September 2, 2007 Share September 2, 2007 (edited) Actually I should say that since 2 yrs ago, I've already have other parents asking me which primary school I intend to enrol my daughter in. Every yr I see the news on these kiasu parents during the primary school enrolment exercise and I think "Nbz...these ppl make me seem like a lousy parent because I'm not that kiasu over the primary school enrolment, as if I'm not concerned for my child's future." Albeniz Turbocharged September 2, 2007 Share September 2, 2007 (edited) I think the quality of the parent is more important. What is missing in a neighborhood primary school could be taken care of by the parents, outside school. Edited September 2, 2007 by Albeniz
Icekitten Clutched September 2, 2007 Share September 2, 2007 Depending on their values mah... Some would stay in a HDB flat but drive a S500... Others would stay in a bungalow but drive an Altis... I believe if the child got "liao", any school also can... Depending on their values mah... Some would stay in a HDB flat but drive a S500... Others would stay in a bungalow but drive an Altis... I believe if the child got "liao", any school also can... I agree with you. I don't believe in 'good' or 'bad' schools. I believe in the child's own attitude and 'good' or 'bad' teachers. And IMO, going to a 'good' school doesn't guarantee my child a good teacher and vice versa. My gal is 5yo and already, I have parents asking me which primary school do I want to enrol her in. My answer is, I will just go for the one which is convenient ie. nearest my place. My SIL's daughter is 1 yr younger than mine and already they've specially shifted house so that they can enrol her in a better primary school than those in their previous estate. *Paiseh, this post should be on top. Icekitten Clutched September 2, 2007 Share September 2, 2007 Definitely. In their own way, parents are also teachers to their children.
Curahee 1st Gear September 2, 2007 Share September 2, 2007 all phases are ballot except for those within its cap or siblings in the school/alumni - walkover in. The foreignors phase are 1st come 1st serve only...dunno why. Because all of them would then apply to ballot for the best school. Leaving the other schools with unfilled vacancies and then wasting time to resources to place the remaining children who failed the balloting into the remaining schools. Balloting is the fairest way, but it's going to be the least efficient method. Who said life is fair anyway? This will turn into a gd money generating money for govt. Imagine they charge money for each ballot, i believe kiasu parents dun mind fork out money to ballot. After that, will have the option to select, den need to pay a few k to select the best school etc etc.
Curahee 1st Gear September 2, 2007 Share September 2, 2007 Depending on their values mah... Some would stay in a HDB flat but drive a S500... Others would stay in a bungalow but drive an Altis... I believe if the child got "liao", any school also can... I notice gd school, most students from rich families, why is this so? I also come across cases whereby rich parent give school many money to "bride" and allow their children to enrol into gd school.
Sfhuang Clutched September 2, 2007 Share September 2, 2007 Actually these "donate and enrol" cases are extremely common. Even my parents donated money in order to get me into primary school, and that was in the 70's mind you. So I think the practice has already been entrenched into our school enrolment system way before I even started my primary school education.
Hiphiphoray 6th Gear September 2, 2007 Share September 2, 2007 Ya agree. This have been happening for donkey years liao. Choosing a good primary is more important than most ppl realise. Cos nowsadays, there are soooo many after school activities. So a school with good values and environment is very important. Epsecially when they are at the learning stage, character development etc etc..... I think there is still this primary 3 or 4 streaming or something. So their future can very well be shaping up as early as primary school period liao. Cant afford to take it easy.
Icekitten Clutched September 2, 2007 Share September 2, 2007 I thought it's been reported that they're going to do away with the streaming?
Typhoonz 4th Gear September 3, 2007 Share September 3, 2007 Aiyo, then if "got" liao. Then dont even need to go primary school....go straight to Cambriadge or Oxford Uni. Aiya, up to you lar. There is no right or wrong answer to this anyway. Yup... Depends of your views...
Mivec9 1st Gear September 3, 2007 Author Share September 3, 2007 streaming is still on...for primary 4 pupils Old system: at the end of Primary 4, pupils are channelled into the following streams: a. EM1: pupils do Higher Mother Tongue Language (HMTL) in addition to English, MTL, Maths and Science. b. EM2: pupils do English, MTL, Maths and Science. c. EM3: pupils do Foundation English, Basic MTL, and Foundation Maths. They do Foundation Science but are not examined for it. 4. EM1 and EM2 are essentially the same course of study, with the difference being that pupils in EM1 take HMTL. EM3 is a different course of study. 5. There is already an overlap in abilities of students taking EM1 and EM2. 20% of P5 students are in EM1. However, almost half of them are students who were first recommended by schools for EM2, but whose parents chose EM1 Current: With the merger of EM1 and EM2 streams, MOE will give schools the flexibility to develop their own P4 end-of-year examinations to identify pupils who are capable of studying HMTL, or are best served by the foundational course offered in EM3

Typhoonz 4th Gear September 3, 2007 Share September 3, 2007 Don't say that lah... Some have a "preferred" school so they would do volunteer work to clock the needed hours so that their kids have "priority" when the enrollment exercise comes around... Depends on what you views are... Not doing all these doesn't mean that you a bad parent...

Typhoonz 4th Gear September 3, 2007 Share September 3, 2007 I would be doing that too... I think the location is more important that the popularity of the school... I definately won't shift house just to be near a popular school... Don't make sense to me at all...
