Neutral Newbie

from what u state, i think u can give up on swift. i change from fit to swift sport recently. what i see the diff is, swift rear leg room is very very small compare to fit. boot space is much small than fit. for mi not a prob as i onli fetch my gf n my boot is onli for my sub. go take a look at both cars with ur family n ask them to sit inside. the fit will confirm be a better choice.

as your parents most prolly in the 70s range i suppose the priority is to get a car that is not too low slung and spacious.

as for calculation don t just look at per month. you must think about how long you want to own the car before selling and the deposit you want to put down ( for new car i recommend at the very minimum 20 per cent down and 7 year loan (to breakeven by 4th year or so)

Actually, there is one car that is below $60K that may be very interesting:

The Suzuki SX4 hatch.

Semi SUV look is attractive, handles and performs well. High seating - much easier for elderly folks to enter and exit car. Decent boot space for a hatch. Only drawback for you is that it only comes in auto. From a driving point of view, it's not too bad because it's a gated auto. Shifiting down from 4 to 3 is a pull right and from 3 or 4 to 2 is a pull down. But... can't match manual fuel consumption and maintenance I guess.

And btw I disagree about hatches being less safe in a crash than a sedan. Manufacturers have to ensure a minimum crash standard. I think that's a reason why (a) hatches are heavier than their sedan brothers and (b) they're more expensive.

I prefer hatch because of the space flexibilty. I chose mazda 2sp because of the spacious internal cabin space with good legroom, high seating with ease of entry, reclinable rear seats for long journey, adjustable rear seats for boot space, easily foldable rear seats, activematic gears, tall headroom not able to hit my head, nice storage box, nicer look, easy assess to boot to take thins when in need and better road holding.

I ever own sedans 4 rides prior to hatch. After owning a Premacy which was rear ended once, I stay to hatch that market to europe. The safety portion of the rear is very tough to protect the occupant per requirement. The acccident from a toyota echo front go in by 1.5 feet or more and my ride is about 6 inches dent in without reaching the rear last row passenger seat give me the confidence of safety in hatch.

Talking of boot space, I look at the sedan has horizontal space and hatch as vertical space design. Just my own opinion and preference.
