Mivec9 1st Gear April 18, 2008 Share April 18, 2008 Bro with yr solid background have you consider passing on yr knowledge in our polytechnic. I believe you weigh more in gold than those PRC engaged to teach in our 2 universities. indeed if i'm him, i will defintely go poly or uni to teach. just my 2 cents opinion
Mivec9 1st Gear April 18, 2008 Share April 18, 2008 I might be making a mid-career switch. I was at a job fair recently and dropped my particulars at one of the booths. One international insurance company called me up for an interview. I am not sure if I should attend as I am quite skeptical about the insurance line. All these while, I have been trained (heavily) in semiconductor-engineering and going into the insurance line is something really new to me. Any insurance agents out there? How's career as an insurance agent/financial planner, need your inputs. HELP! Hi, I'm an AIA financial consultant myself, don't worry too much about which field you are trained in. i was trained in electrical power system , but i'm a financial advisor now. if you are hard working i can assure that you won't "eat grass" for the first 2-3 years. you can do very well too. I totally agree...with hardwork, i will strongly get newbies to get prospects to get investment link type or those yearly premium to boost up their pay. The main objective is get as many customer as possible to build foundation.

Albeniz Turbocharged April 18, 2008 Author Share April 18, 2008 indeed if i'm him, i will defintely go poly or uni to teach. just my 2 cents opinion There is a misconception here. Local Uni won't want their local Ph.D grads as lecturer. The lecturers must come from famous overseas uni. If not, how to achieve world-class uni status? Pay in school is worse than industry. I am getting less than 5k in industry. When I was working in school, it was even lower. Nowadays, technology focus has been shifted. Few polys offer pure semiconductor courses. Difficult to match semicon skill sets to poly needs. But anyway, still trying.
Mivec9 1st Gear April 18, 2008 Share April 18, 2008 I will be more of friend....than teacher....kekeke Anyway, i almost join teaching line but hate the way it is structured here...hence didnt in the end
Mivec9 1st Gear April 18, 2008 Share April 18, 2008 Oh i didnt know local phD is not welcome as lecturer....so are they saying their own prestigious phD is not good enuff to be their own school to teach? I starting to feel sianz of this place...hiaz Anyway bro, if the grass here aint good, we can go elsewhere where they welcome us with open arms. Then i guess i'm in the right industry? Ultramega 1st Gear April 18, 2008 Share April 18, 2008 I have applied for positions on company websites, written Emails to their HRs but received very few responses till date. Positions advertised on company websites are open to the whole world (ie, highly competitive) and there's no guarantee your emails are actually read by someone. Why don't you approach head-hunters for help? Some of the jobs they have are not advertised openly so there will be far fewer competitors and most importantly the head-hunter will ensure your resume is read by the employer. Ultramega 1st Gear April 18, 2008 Share April 18, 2008 I may not be going in as an insurance agent straightaway. As it is a big company and there are many departments, I was invited for an interview for an HR position. But I believe in time to come, I will become one of their financial planners/insurance agents as well. Assuming the first 2-3 yrs is tough (with no income), I should still have some salary from working in their HR department. Then isn't that double change? 1st change to HR then change again to insurance sales? Can say you're taking a longer route.

Sosaria Twincharged April 18, 2008 Share April 18, 2008 u mean teachers pay good? or bonus good? Most say nowadays teachers job very stressful. It is not as glamourous as u see on tv Anything will be stressful if you don't like it. A lot of fresh grads plunge into teaching without knowing what it involves, hence end up getting stressed later. Or some only like the teaching aspect, but nowadays, like any job, also have to do a lot of admin or non-teaching duties, then end up getting stressed also - if they don't have talent in this area
Sosaria Twincharged April 18, 2008 Share April 18, 2008 ...I am still actively looking for a chance to go back to industry. It is just that I received this call from the insurance company while waiting for other interviews (the interviews are difficult to come by BTW). I am keeping my options open. >5k? I am not too sure. The semiconductor industry is really filled with many FTs who are willing to work for half that money. Yes, my experience too, that if you have a high paper qualification, contrary to what most people think: actually the higher your qualification, the lesser the job, and the harder it is to get or change your job. If you're a poly grad with diploma - lots of job offers available Can easily hop around. And yes, unlike the old, glorious days from the mid-90s, the semicon industry has lost its shine (despite all that polishing, well...) from about 2000 onwards. This industry is fast becoming 'sweatshop' employing lots of FTs at low pay.
Sosaria Twincharged April 18, 2008 Share April 18, 2008 ...Local Uni won't want their local Ph.D grads as lecturer. The lecturers must come from famous overseas uni. If not, how to achieve world-class uni status? ... My supervisor used to tell me that the reason for the above, is to avoid duplication of knowledge and expertise in a certain specialised area. PhD is like learning kungfu - at the end of the day, to graduate, you either have to defeat the kungfu master and take over the school - or you have to strike out on your own How can you turn around and try to seek employment at your own kungfu school while the old master is still around
