Drive_carcar Clutched April 24, 2008 Share April 24, 2008 It's rather inevitable that dialect usage will continue to drop and that's because of the education system. The main subjects like mathematics, science and just about everything else except mother tongue are taught in English. I have seen how painful it is, when I gave tuition to my wife's nice to help her survive her PSLE. She comes from a mandarin speaking background where her parents converse with her in mandarin and hokkien. And all of her friends conversed in madarin as well. So she is very uncomfortable with english, and her command of english was like Pri 2 level when I started with her. As a result, the only subject she managed to scrap through was CL2, and she failed every subjects under the sun. So I believe, english being the international commercial language with a few exceptions around the world, still get's top priority in my home. Much to the deteriment of other languages (I'm cantonese, my wife is hokkien).
