How about executives working in stat boards/civil service? Do you think it's worth going for MBA? [sunny]

If you were not asked to take a postgrad degree e.g. MBA or MPA, and if you're paying for the MBA (or any other postgrad course for that matter) on your own, then don't bother. There will not be any change to your salary when you complete the course. And there will likely not be any change to your career progression.

I am taking a MBA now. Working in civil service. I am paying for it and I know it won't help in promotion or pay increment. Why I take. For networking and also to widen my horizon because I feel being in the civil service somehow limits my view and I needed to see more.

Good enlightened point sis! Studies should be exactly that. When I worked for one of the top US banks in the eighties, that's what the senior bosses told me. We get in with a basic degree, and the rest of the path, nothing to do with future graduate degrees already. But always great to learn more, from good professors, or fellow peers who bring interesting experience to the table. :-)

keep blessed

I want to add, taking a MBA I feel will be able to help indirectly in my career in terms of analysis, thinking and view. Anyway, for civil service, they look at your basic degree so it's good if you have honours. For masters, unless they send you for Masters in public admin etc then its gonna help directly in the career.

hey guys... im thinking of doing my MBA in the near future... currently holding a bachelor in com sci... anyone have any comment on whether local uni like NUS/NTU or overseas like UWA [flowerface]

Suggest you to take up a PHD instead ( note : it is a PHD, not a PhD ) from University of Society, because that's what I would hire only.

P = Poor

H = Hungry

D = Desperate

Many MBAs can talk, but cannot deliver.[thumbsdown]

My PHD sure get the job done one. [thumbsup]

Agree with you.

For my business .... I just need them to get the job done.

In S'pore, not many "PHD" around.

[laugh] U have a point. Nowadays there are plenty of graduates and master degree holders who cannot work. The thing is that not many employers realise the most valuable skill and employee can have is a great attitude, not paper qualifications(of course muz have at least a dip).

Then you should switch to private sector instead of wasting time and $$$ on a useless course IMO.

UWA is top sch in australia generally. Unfortunately they aren't strong in com sci. It's only in year 2001 where they started having this course.

If you want to go western australia, curtin is famous for it's comp sci. But then again, it's a image thing for singaporeans. UWA seems to be a "state uni" while curtin isn't. But if you ask the locals there, both unis are very good. infact, both of them + edith cowan + murdock, are all state funded unis. UWA is WA oldest uni. I think about 100+ years? Curtin is maybe like 70years?

Normally MBAs need some years of work experience before can be eligible for entry. But if MSc they can continue immediately after their BSc if their grads are good.

If young FT + MBA....you sure the school is a valid one? Sekali the degree is faked one? [lipsrsealed]

Please don't look down on FT leh. Our local research team hardly have MBA and not to mention about a PhD. But in China, their research team have a handful of PhD and get paid much less. They may not be good in English but they are quality people from reputable universities.

No I meant....there were many cases of FT using fake qualifications. So have to be very careful if they are very young and already got so many qualifications + experience.

[laugh][laugh] It's how I look at the value of taking the MBA. For the threadstarter, he will have to weigh at the pros and cons himself. No one can tell him its totally useful or useless for him as we all have different scales.

No, I wont go to private sector for now as I still like my job.

me nus grad 2 yrs ago

i took 4 yrs to grad bcos wk dont allow me to complete the course in the standard 1.5yr format.... moreover, the longer time i spent there ... the more friends i made

why i chose nus ?

bcos INSEAD, Chicago, UCLA and Stanford was too expensive

those other foreign unis that tie up w local private institutions ... cannot make it

even if the quality of the course and lecturers can make it ... the participants are not the "high calibre" type that you expect in a MBA alumni

till today ... my nus frens are some of the most high networth people on my speed dial list ... plus they are also damn good friends also

although thruout the course we work like sh1t ... machiam like OCS... but now we look back as a good learning experience where we learnt both technical skills and forge strong comradship bcos we all kenna whack together

and the truth is .... i really learnt some useful skills that i can apply into my business ... and i think my staff benefited frm my knowledge sharing also

and last but not least ... good mix of both local and FTs ... gives me a good perspective of the world.

There are also non graduates who remain in the job but they are very "experienced" in protecting themselves.
