Sharks Fin

Hey fellow brudders,

 

Just watched a show 'SharkWater'. Really pity the sharks and I think we should really do something to help this species.

 

Shark fins are tastless and has no nutritional value. I seriously think the killing is not justifiable at all. Furthermore, sharks killed only 5 people a year. As compared to 100 by tigers and elepants.

 

There are alot of misconceptions that sharks are dangerous. In actual fact, they are more afraid of us! Their teeth do not function to tear off body parts and like intelligent animals, they have long term and short term memory, learning that if they cannot fight against something, they wouldn't attack it.

 

So I strongly urge everyone to start boycotting shark fin products.

Maybe somebody should set up a shark farm. Rear sharks for food, just like chicken farms.

that is one solution but shark takes 25 years to reach sexual maturity. 100 Million sharks are killed each year, and 90% of all sharks are gone already.

 

If sharks are wiped out, the rest of the food chain will bloom like crazy as sharks are not there to check their population. Plancktons responsible for 70% of all our oxygen will be gone too as they are fed on by the fishes lower in the food chain.

Pal, I share your sentiments; Our cravings for shark-fins are implanted by our society because ppl say it's nutritious, it taste good and it's highly priced. Often, I find fish maw taste as good too; But yet, my subconscious mind will tell me "shark fin is nutritious and a great delicacy" Gotta resist the temptation..

 

The biggest b*st*rds on earth are human who will kill any animal for our own selfish fantasy. I won't order sharkfin if I make the call but will still eat it if others order lah

 

Anyway, Asians are the last group of ppl you wanna talk animal/environmental protection. Once, I was at MacRitchie reservoir and saw some locals catching an injured monitor lizard; It was a caucasian who went up-front to stop them

Personally I do not take initiative to order shark fin, but if someone else orders it, will still consume it..but am seriously considering to exclude this dish in future when I get married and if need to throw a banquet..I also feel restaurants shld take the first step by not offering this dish...its not quite likely people will take it upon themselves to cease consuming this dish..someone or a group of individuals will have to take the lead somewhere and set the example..

U should go to UK. Jamie Oliver (Celebrity Chef) pushed for the welfare of chicken in UK. So now no more "battery chicken" in the supermarket, just free ranges ones. Meaning the chicken are allowed freedom to run around before they are grown fat enough to be eaten.

 

Then again, with the rising price of everything, wonder who suffer more... Chicken or those who pay to eat them.

Erm.. I think my family eat everything on the shark leh.

 

When times are good, shark fins....

 

When times so so neh... shark meat (cheapest fish available in market}

 

When times are bad.... shark bones to make soup

 

So, we are not wasting sharks by just cutting away the fins and dump them to decay in the sea. Only thing is, it takes long time for them to grow into adults...

 

Was also told that in the 70s, Changi Beach always had baby sharks swimming around one... Now no more liow... hmm....

I agree totally.. looking at some of the replies here.. I reckon you are right. I think many of us are still not as civic minded as we should be.

 

I def wont have sharks fin on my wedding dinner menu for sure.
