25 years is a long time, but with technology, surely that can be shortened.

did you say 100 million sharks are killed each year? that's $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ !!!!! shark farm is definately a money making oppotunity! ROI a bit long only.

Sad to say that that the last remaining few shark finning area belongs to poor countries like Ecuador and Costa Rica. Shark fin smuggling is the next most lucrative activity after heroine smuggling.

With so much at stake, it is indeed hard to let it go, especially when the mafias control pretty much the authorities as well.

It is estimated there will be no more sharks left after 2020 if current activities go on. And the real effects wont come only after another few decade. I guess it it is not immediate, no one will really care. Only our future generations will suffer from our sins.

that is one solution but shark takes 25 years to reach sexual maturity. 100 Million sharks are killed each year, and 90% of all sharks are gone already.

If sharks are wiped out, the rest of the food chain will bloom like crazy as sharks are not there to check their population. Plancktons responsible for 70% of all our oxygen will be gone too as they are fed on by the fishes lower in the food chain.

well.. with the new boom in china.. most people are now richer over there.. and well afford to eat and dine at posh places that serves these shark fins.. so educating them are highly needed over there... shark fins prices are going up too due to high demand in china..

Since shark-fin by itself is tasteless and the yumminess came largely from the soup (chinese called it "shang4 tang1"), I wonder will fake shark-fin be accepted? We can replace the fins with some jelly-like equivalent.

Recently, a jap guy invented man-made caviar in Japan that taste very close to the real thing. If the same happens for shark-fin, it will be a great relief for shark family. [thumbsup]

There are fake sharks fin already. But it is common perception that if you serve fake sharks fin, it is a disgraceful and unglamorous.

And well, for the older generations, you can imagine how important their faces are when throwing a banquet.

One common practice is to replace sharkfin with fishmaw; then add lobster and abalone to the dishes.

The number of endangered animals are on the rise:

1. Sharks

2. Tiger for their medication and male potency

3. Whale

4. Rhino for the horn

The list goes on and on if you consider global climate change and deforestation for timbers and habitat expansion.. [shakehead]

Actually, nature already has an alternative...

There is this "shark fin melon" which has all the strands when U cut up the melon that looked like and texture like sharks fin... My mom used it as substitute for the real shark fin soup nowadays and the whole family like it.. Cheap and good [;)]

Hopefully the $$$ of the melon will not go up up up... [sweatdrop]
