Hrrr...they say the turbocharger needs to be replace after 5 yrs, regardless of the milage.

 

Is that true ?

 

Who is the "they"?

 

A properly maintained turbocharger does not warrant replacement every 5 years. FYI, I have known a Passat owner who has covered 160,000km on his 7 yr old Passat 1.8T without any turbo replacement.

Hmmm...my Superb on stage 1 is getting 11-12km/l on 60/40 Highway/urban...

Mine modded to Stage 1 get 10-12km/l and twice 13.2km/l (after much hard work, which is now rather enjoyable whenever I hit a good FC count)

I am driving a Superb 1.8T and am thinking of doing Stage 1 chip-tuning but am not sure of which chip to get. I have done my 15k servicing already.

 

So far from the forum and internet search: APR, REVO, GIAC, etc. are the common ones.

 

I am looking for one that gives good low end torque and drivability, and to get better FC as a result of lower torque-to-weight and power-to-weight ratios from the enhanced torque and HP. In addition, one that is not problematic like causing engine check light to come on, etc.

 

After sales service is important as major servicing like 30k, 45k and 60k to be done at authorised service centre might reset the chip to its original power/torque. Might need to reset back to stage 1 after that.

 

Please indicate the price too.

Most support will be the revo and giac. Revo by RS Tuning and GIAC by Servo.

I've been on GIAC for close to 2 yrs. So far no problem with it. Got good low end torque and quite aggressive at low end as well.

As Bro Beano and the rest have mentioned, most have either GIAC or Revo. GIAC apparently is more aggresive (kick in the butt feeling) wherelse Revo is more progressive (smoother). Both pricing for Stg 1 are around the range of S$1-1.5k and it takes a mere 5 mins to upload. There is no way for AD to detect if your car has been flashed when you go back for servicing unless like you mentioned, if you have an ECU problem and need to do a reset, then everything will be erased.

 

Generally there is an improvement over stock power ratings.

Stock 150bhp to 1 stg 193bhp

Stock 210 Nm to 1 stg 280Nm of torque

Revo offers SPS Select, which is a hardware "dongle" you can even set octane specific settings (for say Ron 95). For the software only versions, means that you won't be able to do any more tweaking once the dealer sets the software for you. Revo (if you purchase the separate SPS select), gives you some minor tweaking capability. Their even higher Select Plus can even allow you to change boost and timing, all these through your ODB II port.

On stage 1 (o-100kmh) is around 8.2-8.5 seconds region. Makes the drive a little more interesting, stock is not bad anyways.

Will the more aggressiveness of GIAC vs REVO leads to more fuel consumption, assuming everything else such as driver, driving habit, % of highway & city, etc. remain unchanged?

 

Whether chipping will be noticed by the AD is one thing, but I am more concerned with AD unknowingly flash the ECU during major servicings just to update the software in our car. In such case, what is the practice of GIAC and REVO and others? Will they reflash to stage 1 for free or charge us? What is the after sales support of these vendors?

I have researched that APR is more common in Audi? Correct me if I am wrong.

 

I presume that brands such as APR, GIAC, REVO all have specific version of the software for Skoda Superb 1.8T (facelifted) and not generic ones for 1.8T?
